How To Properly Wash Your Face

When washing their face, many people are in an autopilot mode, putting little thought into what their hands are actually doing. What if these little habits and hand movements were causing you skin irritation, premature aging and breakouts?

Wash Your Hands
We know to wash our hands before we prepare a meal, but very few people think about washing their hands with soap and water prior to washing their face. This step is crucial if you are partial to breakouts or clogged pores.

Remove Your Makeup
Removing makeup is a separate step than cleansing. Choose your favorite eye makeup remover wipe, cleansing oil or remover on a cotton round. Just make sure you use a gentle down sweeping motion rather than rubbing back and forth. Rubbing eyes excessively can cause unwanted fine lines and crepey skin.

Wash Twice A Day
Only if you have over sensitized skin should you skip washing your face twice daily and if you do, it should only be your morning cleanse. Night time cleansing is hands down the most important as you need to remove your makeup which has collected or trapped oil, bacteria, toxins and dead skin cells. Washing at night prepares the skin to take on all the treatment products you will be applying afterwards.

Rinse Your Face
Make sure to rinse thoroughly as to not leave any cleanser  or mask residue that could inhibit your treatment products like serums from effectively penetrating. Use warm rather than hot water as it can over dry the skin and cause redness. In the morning try rinsing with cool water or splashing with cold water a few times afterwards to constrict blood vessels and tighten pores.

Drying Your Face
Use a clean towel to dry your face. Never use the hand towel right next to the sink that everyone else has been using to dry his or her hands. Use a patting motion rather than scrubbing the towel roughly against the skin to avoid irritation.
