Blinc products are unlike any other products I have tried in the realm of eye makeup. What Blinc has been able to do with these products is truly innovative, wonderful, and so much fun! From the product packaging to formulas used and the ease of application these Blinc products are beautiful and are a must have for anyone looking for quality mascaras and eyeliners that deliver ten fold, what is expected of the products. First things first, both the Blinc Mascara & the Blinc Eyeliner came in a sleek aluminum tube with a twist off cap and had an insert telling you a little about the product and how to use it. The packaging is beautiful and thoughtfully made. Much like first impressions with people, you can tell a lot about a makeup brand by how they package their products and Blinc did a great job. The aluminum tubes that they came in not only provide the internal product some extra protection but if you are anything like me, and you carry your makeup in your purse or travel bag, the aluminum tube also prevents any unfortunate messes that could occur. The beautiful colors of the tubes make them very easy to find in your purse or on your makeup counter. The mascara from Blinc is amazing. I was really nervous because I have VERY sensitive eyes and I hate when I am using a mascara and can feel little flakes coming off or feel them irritating my eyes as the day goes on. This was not the case at all with the Blinc mascara, so for those of you with sensitive eyes or similar concerns, this mascara was wonderful and I would recommend it for that reason alone. Thankfully I don’t have just one reason to recommend it because it was wonderful for so many reasons! What makes this mascara unique is that the mascara itself forms “tubes” around your eye lashes. After reading that, I admit that I was a bit skeptical (okay, very skeptical). I also typically hate fiber mascaras since the fibers always fall into my eyes or the formula burns. The Blinc tubes really do work though and, the effect they have on the lashes is GORGEOUS! Traditional mascaras, like the ones that we have become accustomed to, have a brush that coats your lashes. This Blinc mascara  forms tubes around the lashes that are water resistant. You can touch them (once they dry), rub your eyes, sleep (I did just to see if it was true), and go outside in the heat of the summer or humidity and not have to worry about raccoon eyes. It was truly amazing. The mascara does come in several other colors, I prefer black, but there is a color for every preference. I especially loved it because the product claims that the tubes won’t come off until you are ready. I love when a brand advertises and delivers on what they say their product can do.  I’m more inclined to try other products within their lines based on the trust that they’ve instilled. Below is a close up of the mascara brush so you can see what it looks like.  The look the mascara has on the lashes as I mentioned is gorgeous. I have white blonde eyelashes and if I don’t wear mascara, my eyes look bald. I need a mascara that is going to not only accentuate the length my lashes do have, but also provide lots of length to give them that flirty feminine look that we all envy. The mascara coats the lashes with the tubes, separates them perfectly, makes them look totally black, and the tubes make them look so long and beautiful. I included a before and after so you could see the effect.  I was just overall really pleased with how my lashes looked with this mascara, and I have been wearing it non-stop since I got it. It’s going to be one of my favorites for a long time. Just look at the difference! Now lets talk about the Blinc eyeliner pen which I also love! There isn’t too much different about this liner upfront that will shock you, it looks pretty normal. However, the formulation is different which makes it go on really easily and smoothly with no clumps or giant blobs that alway ruins the look of a nice line. This pen, which I’ll post in a picture below, has such a precise tip. I literally opened it and said “wow” because I couldn’t believe how exact the line was and how finely tipped the pen was. Also, the fibers in the pen tip are very smooth and flexible and PERFECT for applying this formula eyeliner. I love this so much! I have been using it nonstop, and it works perfectly to transition looks from night to day because of its precision. You can add a wing or even go behind the eyelashes to add a bolder line. Not kidding, this was in my purse all weekend. This eyeliner, like it's mascara friend, won’t budge. I slept with it on and woke up with a perfect line, I couldn’t believe how smudge proof and wearable it is. Below is a close up of the eyeliner pen so you can see just how fine and precises the tip of this pen is.  To recap, this mascara and eyeliner combo is super long wearing, easy to apply, very precise, and very beautiful. But what totally, completely sold me even more, and I have to mention is, it’s SO FUN TO TAKE OFF! I know that sounds really weird to say but, every time I put it on I think, “this is going to be so fun to take off!” because it comes off so nicely and easily. All you need is water. With a tiny bit of rubbing and warm water, the mascara tubes and the eyeliner just wipe off, slide off, or fall off. I don’t really know how to put it, but they just simply come off. It’s so easy, so clean, so fast and fun. There is no black cloudy mess at all which means you can wear as much of it as you want and not worry about messy clean up. It’s as if Blinc understands me and what I want in my mascara and eyeliner. I have no words to tell you how happy this made me and how much I loved wearing and even taking off these products. I have told literally everyone I know that wears mascara, and now I’m telling you because it’s A-MAZ-ING! Whether you are a young professional or a busy mom, this does not mean you cannot find time or shortcuts when it comes to a beauty regiment. So what if you do not have an entire day to commit to the spa! Here are a few tips and tricks for even the busiest of people.Choose multi-tasker products! Use a moisturizer with an SPF, a primer with anti-oxidants, argan oil for cuticles and hair flyaways, or a product that can be used as a cream blush and a lip color.Don’t have time or are you to tired at the end of the day to be using a mask twice a week? Multi-task and apply a mask towards the beginning of your shower, leave it on while you go through your normal shower routine and rinse it off at the end.Think you do not have time to put on a full face of makeup everyday? Everyone can find ten minutes to apply mascara. Sick of people saying you look tired? Curl your eyelashes, this instantly makes you look more awake, pair this with a good coat of mascara and a nude liner on your bottom waterline and you will have everyone fooled that you got your full eight hours of sleep.Skip washing your hair everyday. Washing your hair everyday is not recommended as it strips away natural oils. Only wash your hair every other, to every three days. This will cut down on the time it takes for you to get ready in the morning, because you wont be spending so much time blow drying and styling. If you have oily roots use a dry shampoo. If your bangs easily become greasy, tuck your hair into a shower cap but leave your fringe out while you shower and wash your face.Skip styling your hair by going to bed with it wet and in a loose bun on the top of your head. In the morning let your hair down and part for a gorgeous tousled look. When getting a manicure opt for gel. The polish is cured using a light and there is no waiting around for it to dry or smudging your polish while digging for your keys in your purse. Gel manicures also last about two weeks. While some shortcuts can be made here are the steps you should never skip:Washing your face before bed is a must to remove makeup, oil, dead skin, allergens and other toxins that can lead to skin issues. If you had a late night out or are just feeling completely exhausted, keep a package of facial cleansing wipes next to your bed.  Just do not make this a nightly habit!Always apply sunscreen, everyday. It does not matter how busy you are, this is not something you can skip or only care about seasonally. Melanoma is one of the most prevalent cancers and it also happens to be the most preventable! Easy Spiderweb Eye look using Blinc products. Step 1: Apply your foundation and concealer. Set the eye concealer with a light colored eye shadow and do your eyebrows as normal. Step 2: Using Blinc Ultra Thin Liquid Eyeliner Pen find your guidelines for the mapping of the design. Step 3: Draw a long line from the corner of your eyelids towards the brow. If you are familiar with “cat eye” liner, this follows the same first stroke. Step 4: Draw as many lines as desired from the lash line out, top and bottom. Step 5: Connect your lines by drawing tiny “U” shapes between them. Step 6: Using a tiny detail brush and the shade Obsidian from the Shadow Fusion palette, create shadow lines to give your cobweb a 3-D effect! Step 7: Apply Mascara as desired. Stop at this step if you prefer a more simplistic look. Step 8: If you are feeling daring, don’t stop here! Let your creativity come alive. Draw a line extending down your cheek and draw a spider with the liquid pen, or attach a rhinestone with eyelash glue for the body of your spider and draw legs on with the liquid pen. Creepy long false lashes could also be worn. The possibilities are endless! Get creative and share with us your spider web looks based on this tutorial!   Blog Written by askderm's in-house Esthetician  Chantal Monique is a NYS licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. It’s that time of year again where we have our sights set on our New Year’s resolutions and on all the goals we have created for ourselves for the upcoming year.  One of the most popular resolutions is getting in shape and losing weight.  Here are some pre and post workout skincare tips that will surely make a difference in your skin health.  These tips are simple to remember and easy to follow. As you may notice, gyms, fitness classes and even outside, you’ll see many more people working out to work on their personal fitness goals.  Working out is great for your body, physically and mentally.  When a person exercises, they are getting much needed endorphins that need to lift their mood.  Besides your overall feeling great, you will also be releasing toxins as you sweat; just an added benefit of fitness.       Pack Your Gym Bag with The Necessities… Many people go to the gym before or after work and rush out of there with just a quick shower…not too fast.  In order to prevent facial or body acne, there are some necessities that should be in every gym bag because a quick shower isn’t enough. Make up Remover. Yes, your crush is working out on the other elliptical and you really want to look cute for them…if you must, stick to just mascara and a tinted lip balm when working out so you don’t clog your pores and cause a breakout. Always workout with all makeup properly removed from your skin. The REN Rosa Centifolia eye makeup remover is a silky milk make-up remover designed with a blend of oils and flower water for gentle but thorough cleansing including waterproof mascara. Gentle, oil free face wash. The gentle, oil free facial wash will leave your skin feeling fresh and clean without any heavy residue. The Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash is an oil-free face wash that cleanses for all skin types. Oil free clarifying body wash. Whether you take a shower before or after working out or both, you should have a nice, soft smelling oil free body wash that will help keep your skin looking good avoiding any body acne that can pop up due to bacteria and clogged pores. Non Alcoholic Toner. These non-alcoholic toners will not only refresh your skin they will free your skin from bacteria giving you a truly fresh face with balanced PH levels. The Avene Gentle toner is alcohol-free, oil-free, hypoallergenic, and noncomedogenic.  Cleansing Wipes.  I know many people use the same rag/towel to wipe their faces as they’re working out and there are some that will even wipe the sweat with their extremely bacteria infested hands (have you seen all the sweat that lingers on machines in the gym?!?! Especially with those who don’t wipe them down properly). Keep a pack of cleansing wipes on you for when you need to freshen your face while working out without clogging your pores with nasty bacteria. Acure's cleansing wipes are all-natural biodegradable Argan Oil Towelettes refresh, cleanse, soothe, detoxify on the spot.  Different Clothing.  This may sound a bit obvious, but make sure you have another set of clothes to change into once you shower.  For females, wearing the same sports bra that you wore and got sweaty in will increase your risk of body acne while it keeps the sweat and bacteria on your freshly cleaned, open pored skin.     Make Sure You Are Prepared To Sweat It Out… Keep That Hair Back. Invest In A Cute Headband.  I too have tried (and failed miserably) to look cute while working out and that includes keeping my long hair loose…not a great idea.  Not only will your workout suffer since you’ll be more focused on pushing your hair out of your face but your skin will suffer too. Hair that falls on your skin while you’re sweating will more likely get an acne breakout. Plus, who wants that sweaty hair look?!  Wear Moisture Wicking Clothing.  I don’t care if you sweat, sparkle, glisten….whatever you may call it, it is pretty gross seeing large sweat stains coming from clothing.  Not only does it look disgusting, just think of all the bacteria that is being trapped tightly against your skin. Bacteria causes not only breakouts but other infections so check out some awesome workout gear that are moisture wicking to keep you cool, dry and feeling cute! My favorite lifting tank not only is moisture wicking but has the awesome phrase ‘Mascara and Muscles’, there are so many awesome sites so go check them out!  Keep Water Handy.  While you work out and sweat it out, your body is dehydrating.  Make sure you keep your body and skin hydrated by drinking water as you work out.  Avoid The Tanning Booth.  I know, I know, your gym membership is only ten dollars more for unlimited tanning a month. AVOID it!  Not only are you risking your skin of skin cancer but you are also damaging it and making it age rapidly.  Opt for a lightweight sunless tanner to still get that gorgeous glow without all the risk.  Wear SPF.  For those of you that enjoy exercising outdoors with the wonderful sun on your face and breeze blowing by you, you need to make sure your skin is protected by always having a lightweight, oil free, broad spectrum uva/uvb sunscreen.  Never leave home without it.       After A Good Workout… Take A Shower.  Once your body cools down, take a cool shower.  Your skin is not only covered in sweat and bacteria but your pores are open and more susceptible to infection.  After a nice shower with a gentle, oil free wash your skin will feel refreshed, cleansed and free from blemishes. Apply Alcohol Free Toner.  Balance your body’s ph levels and allow the toner to let products better penetrates your skin by spritzing on freshly clean, naked skin. Keep Your Skin Moisturized.  Even though the last thing you’d want after working out is your skin feeling heavy, you still need to keep it moisturized to make up for loss of water while exercising.  Apply a light, oil free moisturizer to not only provide the needed moisture but will help your skin from getting clogged pores. Rehydrate, replenish and detoxify skin while shielding it against harmful micropollutants with derma-e's silky, lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. Avoid Touching Your Face.  I have the habit of touching my face, often. Rubbing, touching and even just resting my head on my hands are bad habits that really should be stopped.  While gyms are susceptible to disgusting germs, there are bacteria everywhere you touch so while your pores are still open, avoid touching your face and allowing germs to enter the pores. Enjoy working towards all of your New Year’s Resolutions no matter what they may be.  Whether it’s losing weight, eating healthier, enjoying the small things or getting that dream job you are hoping for, keep your eyes on the prize and focus on what you want.   The New Year is a time to reevaluate your life and start fresh.  If any obstacles or hurdles get in your way, don’t let it stop you just let it make you stronger.  So grab your gym bag, lace up those sneakers and have fun getting active! Do it not only to fit in those jeans but to mentally feel amazing. If you are lucky enough to be traveling anytime soon, or are just daydreaming about jet setting to Tahiti, be aware that traveling can take its toll on your skin. Here are my beauty and skin care tips for when you are flying sky high.Hydrate: Make sure you drink plenty of water before and during your flight. When you are properly hydrated you feel less sluggish, and this will help you beat the jet lag. When you do not feel 100% it shows on the outside. The cabin pressure within the plane can lead to bloating and swelling of the fingers and toes, so opt for water and fruit, over soda and salty snacks.Moisturize: There is almost no humidity within the cabin of a plane. That means the air circulating around you is pulling moisture from your skin, eyes and mucous membranes.Apply a lotion or cream to your entire face and body prior to your flight and re-apply often while on board. Choose products with humectants, meaning they draw in and retain moisture. If you suffer from oily skin, don’t falsely believe that the dry air from your flight is doing your pores any favors. You still need hydration if you have oily and acne prone skin. Your skin will go into overdrive and produce even more oil to make up for the lack of moisture. While I am a huge fan of facial mists year round, there is speculation on whether or not using these mid-flight will lead to further surface moisture loss from your skin when the cabin air evaporates the water. So just to be safe, save your hydrating spray for when you arrive to your destination for an instant pick me up. Decreased moisture within your throat and nasal cavity can increase your chances of catching a cold or the flu. Viruses have a much easier time embedding into airways when there is less moisture and mucus creating a protective barrier. A saline spray may be a good option for those who are prone to sore throat and or nosebleeds during flights.Avoid Makeup: Anyone who knows me, as a makeup artist and makeup addict will not believe I just wrote that! The truth is I have oily skin and large pores so I dread a public face sans foundation, but any time I have worn a full face of makeup on a flight, it looks horrific by the time I land. My foundation will crack and oxidize, turning darker because of my increased oil production, my well-defined brows will have faded and my mascara will have left dark smears on my oily eyelids. I suggest opting for just a facial moisturizer, BB or CC cream and a tinted lip balm, that is it! Just accessorize with an over sized pair of sunglasses and you will not feel the need for eye makeup. Keep a pouch of essentials- mineral powder, mascara, blush and perhaps a bright lipstick in your carry-on so you can apply after your arrival.Protect your Hair: If you have longer locks, never wear them down during a flight. When your hair is down there is greater surface area for moisture to escape from. Treat your hair with nourishing oil and either braid it, put it in a topknot or a sock bun.  For another layer of protection wear a handkerchief or a silky scarf tied into a turban around your head.Sun Protection: The debate on whether or not an aisle or window seat is better is very simple to me. I always request a window seat, not for the view, it is so I can pull the window shade completely down. While the rules of etiquette may not be set in stone when it comes to who’s arm rest belongs to who, it is cut and dry when it comes to the window- whomever sits next to it, is in control of it. Remember you are not on the surface of the earth anymore and the intensity of UV exposure increases with elevation. In your approved quart size bag, containing 3oz containers, there must be a sunscreen, preferably with an SPF of 30. As always choose a sunscreen that states it is broad spectrum or has a high PA+++ rating. Don’t forget to apply sun-protection to the sides of your face, neck, ears and hands as these areas often go over looked. Make sure your carry-on lip balm contains sunscreen. Those oversized sunglasses are not just for hiding your lack of eye makeup; they are protecting your retinas from damage and preventing crow’s feet. These tips should have you feeling ready to embark upon your next trip. Your suitcase is packed, your skin is prepped and you will be departing with everyone wondering - Who is that woman with the headscarf, dark shades and GORGEOUS skin?!Blog Written by askderm's in house Esthetician Chantal MoniqueChantal Monique is a NYS licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. Get healthy, radiant skin this spring! Follow these tips to freshen up your skincare routine.   1. Toss Old Skincare and Makeup Products: Toss anything that's no longer working for you, isn't a fit for your skin, or is older than 2 years. Sanitize your makeup palettes and toss that grimy cosmetic bag. Replace your mascara every three months to avoid harmful bacteria. Pencils and pressed powders have a significantly longer life span than liquid and cream products and can last two years plus. Loose mineral powders are inert and cannot harbor or grow bacteria but if you are applying them with a germ-ridden brush, you are not doing your skin any favors. If the consistency, color or odor changes with any of your products, then it is time to toss and replace.   2. Wash Your Brushes: Makeup brushes and applicators are breeding grounds for oil and bacteria. If you are not regularly washing your makeup brushes, now is the time to give them a good shampoo. Its important to wash your brushes to prevent future breakouts. 3. Lighten Up: Lighten up your winter skincare regimen by swapping out heavy foundations and moisturizer for light-weight creams and water-based moisturizers. If you were using a hair mask weekly during the cold season, you may need to skip a week if you notice your hair is becoming greasy faster. 4. Wear Sunscreen: As the weather warms and we ditch our gloves and heavy sweaters, more skin is revealed and being exposed to harmful UV rays. Do not forget about parts that are regularly exposed but rarely protected, like the hands while driving. Check your sunscreen dates! Unopened they usually last a few years. Opened SPF needs to be replaced annually. Sunscreen formulas can easily become unstable due to temperature changes or from sitting so long that the formula starts to separate. This also means the sun protection ingredients may be unevenly distributed within the lotion and will not give you an even coverage of protection from the sun. Don't wait for the temperatures to warm up, wear sunscreen year-round to reduce premature skin aging. Make sure you apply generously and don't forget your neck. What are some of your skincare tips for spring?
One of the most common beauty complaints I hear from clients has to do with sparse lashes or of thinning lashes as one ages. I was sent the eyelash stimulator for review purposes. My lashes and brows were photographed prior to my first application and then again on the completion of the product pen. I applied the product twice daily to my upper lash line and to my eyebrows. I did not choose to apply any product to my bottom lashes as they are quite long naturally and I am more concerned with my sparse brows. The pen applicator allows for an easy eyeliner like application.  I noticed that my eyelashes became thicker after about three weeks of use. My eyelashes are naturally very light at the tips, so to my naked eye I could not really see a difference at first. It was when my mascara was applied that I was impressed and could see a significant difference in length and density. I do enjoy wearing false lashes for special occasions or nights out, but since using Revita EPS I have not felt the need to apply a strip lash at all. I do see a small difference in my brows, especially in the front of the brow between my eyes and in the middle of the brow. I feel like it is important to have realistic expectations when it comes to the brow area, as this area is one of the easiest to damage the hair follicles permanently and I am a guilty participant of the 90s thin brow trend. Between last decades’ over-tweezing, the fact that I wear my bangs to the right and I tend to sleep on my right side (constant friction) is why the end of my right brow had not filled in how I hoped, and not due to failure of the product. If you are interested in a lash-enhancing product that does not require a prescription, nor does it come with some of the side effect of a prescription drug, I would recommend the DS Laboratories Revita EPS. Want the inside scoop? Chantal, askderm's in-house esthetician, shares her top beauty tips and skincare expertise for Summer 2015. “If you find that your creamier makeup products are slipping and not staying in place try setting them with powder! Most people know to do this in regards to their foundation, but eyeliner smudging and lid transfer can be prevented by lightly pressing a shadow over the area you placed the pencil liner.”  - Chantal " For clearer skin never go to bed without removing your makeup or without washing your face. Toxins, makeup, oil and dead skin cells will become trapped within your skin's follicles, this will lead to more acne blemishes and enlarged pores."  - Chantal "Apply essential oils to your wrists, neck, temples and inhale deeply to enjoy the most benefits."  - Chantal "Unlike chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens sit on top of the surface of the skin and begin to give you sun protection immediately. Chemical sunscreens take about 15 to 20 minutes to absorb and start working properly."  - Chantal "Full body exfoliation promotes the growth of new healthy cells and also has the benefit of increasing circulation that may temporarily leave you feeling invigorated. If you choose a salt scrub you have the added mineral benefits as well as the fact that salt has anti-microbial properties and can help with blemish causing bacteria." - Chantal "Eating seasonal produce is a must. For spring, my go-to veggie is Asparagus! It is loaded with antioxidants and minerals. Asparagus is a prebiotic, meaning it helps feed the "good" gut bacteria and it is a diuretic, helping to rid you of that sluggish bloated feeling." - Chantal "Spring cleaning is not just for your home, it applies to your skincare products as well! If you are not regularly washing your makeup brushes, now is the time to start! Product shelf life upon opening varies, so toss your mascara if it is over three month old and replace your sunscreen annually. Pressed powder products can last two years plus. If any product you own has changed color, texture or odor, it is time to ditch it for a new one." - Chantal "Full and thick eyebrows convey youth and vitality. The growing popularity of eyebrows not only being thick, but straight and angular; bordering on the edge of masculinity, has to do with the notion that women are feeling stronger and confident, both socially and within the workplace." - Chantal   Blog Written by askderm's in-house Esthetician  Chantal Monique is a NYS licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. October is one of my favorite times of year because at the end of it, after I’ve drowned myself in everything pumpkin, I get to dress up! Want to be a deer this year for Halloween, all you need is a brown shirt, some deer ears & this adorable doe eyed makeup look that is quick and easy to do. Here is a popular and pretty simple Halloween makeup idea. I used the Blinc Eyeliner pen in black (perfect for fine details) and like organic skincare line's sour cherry cleansing milk which is perfect for not only removing the makeup but also everyday use. For all the colors except for black I just used a regular drug store Halloween makeup kit. How To Makeup: The Deer: Start with a clean face and apply your normal foundation, if you choose to use cream makeup do not apply powder over your foundation or the creams will not blend as well.   Next bronze up the apples of the cheeks all the way back to where your ear connects with your face. I used a cream contour color from my regular makeup set for this step.   Next I used my Blinc eyeliner pen in black and drew two lines down the side of my nose and a line across my nose about where my nostrils are. I then filled in my nose, blacked out my cupids bow and top lip. I filled in my eyebrows with a fawn brown eyebrow pencil and made them look a little bushy and messy since the look we are going for is a deer look.   I then used my white cream makeup and filled in the area from about mid cheek up and mid forehead down, lining around my eyes as close as possible and down the bridge and sides of my nose. I then took my eyeliner pen with the assistance of the black Halloween cream makeup and drew lines in the inner v-corner of my eye and down below my bottom lid out and added some white dots on the rest of the brown part of my cheek. Lastly I added lots of mascara (fake eyelashes would be good as well) and some soft red lip stain on my bottom lip. That's it! All you need to finish the look is the ears and fawn colored outfit! If you don’t like the deer idea my fiance told me it reminded him of a brown spotted dog, so dog ears would be a fun alternative as well! If you need an idea for a couples costume, do the deer look and make the other half the hunter! It’s cute and funny all rolled into one easy Halloween look.     Blog Written by askderm's Beauty Blogger Sydney Nichole is a self-proclaimed beauty nerd.  She stays on top of the latest makeup, hair, and beauty trends. Meg 21 Skincare is so confident that their products will help fight premature skin aging that they developed the 28-Day Challenge. As a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist, I sure was intrigued by Meg 21's confidence. I did not hesitate, sign me up! Twenty eight days ago I was first introduced to the Meg 21 Skincare Line. It was developed by researchers who were working on the effects that sugars have in the body including how it can speed up the aging process. For those who know me, I have a true love affair with chocolate. It is part of my diet daily and it has been my biggest struggle to attempt eliminate it. I used the following products for the past 28 days as my skincare regimen. I did not stray from these four products in order to get a strong grasp on their combined effectiveness. Clean and Clear Cleanser Bright and Firm Eye Treatment Cell Therapy Step 1: Clean and Clear Cleanser The Clean and Clear Cleanser is a non-foaming lotion. I used this twice daily: once in the morning to begin my AM routine and once to remove my makeup at night. This is a new type of cleanser to me as I typically use a foaming cleanser. After using this cleanser for 28 days, I am hooked! I recommend massaging this in for at least 30 seconds to get the full benefits. I found it very soft and soothing. After a long day out in the sun, it took away all of my skin's irritations. As an added bonus, this cleanser was great at removing makeup (even for my heavy-handed mascara technique). Step 2: Bright and Firm Eye Treatment I used the Bright and Firm Eye Treatment twice daily as well. I Cannot say enough good things about this product as it is an all-around great product. I saw a definite reduction in fine lines around my eyes. On bad allergy days, my eyes were not puffy at all! I was able to apply my concealer directly over this treatment without any interference. This product came in a convenient pump that made it fast and easy to use. Plus the packaging was adorable! Step 3: Cell Therapy I was most excited to try the Cell Therapy product as it lists Grape Seed as an ingredient. I have tried to incorporate grape seed extract into my diet for years because of its anti-aging qualities so this is the perfect product for me! I also used this product twice daily. The Cell Therapy gave my skin the brightness it was lacking without the harsh side effects of a Vitamin C cream. For those with dry skin, you will want to apply a moisturizer over this product for added moisture. Using this product combined with the summer heat, was enough by itself for me. So for those that have skin that can become irritated quite easily, Meg 21 Skincare may be the answer for you. Now if only it could make me walk past the chocolate it would be a true miracle but it is good to know there is something out there to keep my skin from showing the results of my bad habits. Halloween is right around the corner. Here is another Halloween makeup tutorial look that is getting a lot of hits lately. It's the Pop Art/Comic Book character look. This is a great look for both guys and girls and can be done in a lot of variations, plus it is super easy. I used my Blinc Eyeliner pen and red Halloween cream makeup for this look.  Start this look by washing your face and applying your foundation as you normally would. I didn’t put on any blush or contour but that is completely optional. Then, using the Blinc eyeliner pen, fill in an thicken your eyebrows making them prominent and also outline the curve in your nostrils, your forehead, jawline and cheek contour. I also did a small mark under my lip in my natural curve and in between my eyebrows to make them look more characterized. I then lined down my nose sort of off center and around the tip of the nose. Remember when doing this to think of how things would look as a “drawn” feature because you are trying to look like a drawing. I added lines around my lips and in the inner corners of my eyes. I then add in some pretty intense eyeliner on my actual eye with a very over exaggerated wing.   Lastly I added my Blinc Mascara in black with some color from any lip gloss on my lips. I then finished off the “pop-art” look with red dots of color going in diagonal lines down my face and added in dots where I felt it was needed. There are several variations of this look out there and if you aren’t a fan of the red dots you can opt for white dots, make them smaller, make them larger, one variation I did on my friend was putting dots on side cheek bone down to neck and on the other side of her face eyebrow up to hairline and I actually really like that look. We used smaller white dots and it really made her pop art look pop! If you want to make it extra glam, do the limited dot idea with white and use eyelash glue to glue clear rhinestones on top of the dots and add a bold color eyeshadow, I suggest a bright purple or a bright blue.   If you want to switch this up for a guy it is incredibly easy to do. You would still line the eyes and lips only on the eyes leave off the wing and for the lips make the line around them thinner and use a tinted lip balm (if needed) to make the lip color more prominent. When I showed my friend this look she: A. Begged me to do it for her to see it. B. thought it was actually kind of scary because it looks so real in low light and from a distance. I won’t lie, up close it doesn't look as real from all angles because you look more 3D the closer you are and less 2D; but just work the selfie angle all night and you’ll be turning heads! This look does take a bit of time because you want perfect lines and it make take a little bit of practice to adjust it to your face best but once you know what you want to do, it’s a breeze and actually easier to do on other than yourself. Sport some bright colored clothes or dress as you imagine a comic book character would and you are good to go!   Blog Written by askderm's Beauty Blogger Sydney Nichole is a self-proclaimed beauty nerd.  She stays on top of the latest makeup, hair, and beauty trends. Summer has finally arrived and with it, comes all the pool parties, ocean side vacations, backyard barbecues, and the beauty dilemmas that can come with it. Here is how to feel good about your body, keep makeup meltdowns at bay, how to get that dewy summer skin & healthy hair you dream about.  If you frequent my blogs you know my stance on sun protection to the point of ad nauseum. Yes, your body needs Vitamin D, which it synthesizes from the sun, but the risks can far outweigh the benefits if you are choosing to fry yourself. If you are one of those people who must catch some rays here is how to do it healthfully: Exposure should only occur three times a week for 10-15 minutes MAX without sunscreen (you may be able to go a few more minutes if you naturally have a darker skin tone.) No more than that! To keep yourself within these healthy parameters schedule to do this during your lunch hour Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Set a timer. Once you hear that “ding”, you are done baking, literally! If you still question whether or not your vitamin D levels are adequate, schedule an appointment with your primary doctor for a blood test to see where you stand. Simple adjustments to your diet can also supplement your Vitamin D. For a Complete Guide to Proper use of Sunscreen and the dangers of UV exposure please check out my past blog posts:             “Tips and Tricks You may not Know About Sunscreen”             “Tanning Bed Dangers”             “Why you need to Protect Yourself From the Sun Year Round” While wearing sunscreen is obvious, here are other summer beauty tips to consider: Make Fruits and Veggies the Main focus of every meal. At least half of the plate of every meal should consist of produce. Farmers markets, roadside stands and the local grocery store are abundant with fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Lycopene a powerful antioxidant is not only found in tomatoes but also has high concentrations in watermelon. So enjoy all the summer specific vegetables and fruits. During warmer months it is truly important to keep your body hydrated. If you struggle to drink the recommended ounces of water daily, try adding sliced strawberries, cucumbers, lemon or mint to your water and you will find yourself more likely to drink it. Aside from all the vitamin and mineral benefits of increasing your produce consumption, you will also find that this additional intake will aid in your digestion to alleviate sluggishness and will help you in your health goals. Trying to be bikini ready and banish bloat? Avoid excess salt and dairy on swimsuit days. Sweat and Sand Proof Your Makeup. Forgo full coverage foundations; instead opt for tinted moisturizers, BB creams, and CC creams. Conceal only where you really need it and use powder on your oily areas sparingly. If you are not using a primer as the first step to your makeup routine, it is a product worth investing in to ensure that your makeup endures and withstands sweltering temps. If you have skin prone to oiliness, use blotting papers throughout the day to combat shine. Setting sprays also lock in makeup and increase its longevity. While some may think powders are the key to every summer look, products like cream blushes wear beautifully in the warmer months, they melt into the skin and create a realistic healthy flush. Cream shadows also tend to stand up better to water. If you find that your pencil eyeliner is leaving you looking like a raccoon by traveling down onto the tops of your cheeks or transferring onto your oily upper lid, try using liquid eyeliners instead. If you want to experiment with bold colors but are intimidated, try focusing on one feature and leaving the rest of the face neutral- a daring purple, orange or bright red lipstick pairs beautifully with just a swipe of mascara and well-groomed eyebrows. Likewise, multiple coats of a colored mascara is a fun look when paired with just a simple nude lip balm. If you plan on being directly in the sun for an extended period of time avoid super shiny lip glosses as they can magnify your lip’s sun exposure. While a lipstick may not contain the same SPF ingredients (ex Titanium Dioxide) as a specified sun protection balm, the more opaque a lipstick is, the more sun protection it offers. This makes the newly popular long lasting matte liquid lipsticks a summer favorite. Considering it dries matte, you will also banish the hair-stuck-to-your-lip gloss experience all of us girls dread. Adjust your Skincare Regiment. If you have oily or acne prone skin you may find that you need to switch to lighter product formulations. Swap creamier cleansers for gel washes. Oily skin types still need to use moisturizer but may find that it needs to only be applied once daily, preferably at night. For the very oiliest of skin, a hydrating facial spray is a perfect moisturizer. After misting onto your face, use your fingertips to gently press into the skin. Masks are a great addition to your summer routine. Clay masks will absorb excess oil, while gel masks, can be stored in the fridge and are great for cooling the skin, while reducing redness and sensitivity. Hyperpigmentation can become more apparent in the summer. Add a Vitamin C, licorice extract or Kojic acid containing serum to your routine. However if you continue to tan and expose yourself to too much sun, you will continue to have discoloration. Exfoliate (dry brushing, salt scrub, loofa) your body regularly on days you do not shave. Avoid unsightly bumps, folliculitis or razor rash by opting to have a professional wax. Once waxed you will not have to worry about shaving everyday or dark hair being visible within the follicle. If you opt to shave apply a benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid or salicylic acid lotion to the shaven area to avoid razor rash. Coconut oil is also great post shave as it hydrates and has both anti-microbial/ anti-inflammatory properties. Here are my tips if some form of water is your destination! Beach and Ocean Beauty Tips: Schedule a gel manicure/pedicure prior to a beach vacation. Sand and salt breakdown and dull regular nail polishes, opting for the gel version will insure your polish stays shiny and last far longer without chipping. Long walks on the beach anyone? While the idea has a cheesy connotation walking on the sand engages muscles differently. The unevenness of the sand underneath you and the extra resistance is great for strengthening and toning your ankles, calves, hamstrings and glutes. If your brows tend to bleach in the sun and you want to avoid that, rub your sunscreen lotion into them or swipe a sunscreen stick over them. Why spend money on a salt spray for your hair when you can make use of the ocean water. As your hair air dries, twist small sections around your fingers for the perfect beachy waves. Ocean water contains many healthy minerals and trace elements and is known for healing wounds. Those who have acne, scars and eczema may see improvement to their skin post an ocean vacation. While the salt and sand is a great exfoliator, it is also drying so utilize outdoor showers to rinse off the excess. Apply a lightweight body lotion after a day at the beach. Swimming Pool Tips: Chlorine can be just as drying as salt, so rinse yourself as soon as possible after being in the pool and apply a full body moisturizer. Wear flip flops in public areas as humidity and standing water, like what is found in changing areas and around the pool, are breeding grounds for the viruses and fungus that cause athlete’s foot, ringworm and plantar warts. I have color treated hair and despite having my color done every four weeks, I keep chlorinated pool water from ever touching my hair. If you aren’t this hardcore, prior to the pool, wet your hair and apply a heavy weight conditioner that you do not rinse out until afterwards. This should give your locks an added layer of protection. If you do not have time to go home and shower after the pool and are worried about your hair, bring along a club soda to rinse away residue. To avoid brassiness or the dreaded green pool hair, mix baking soda with your favorite shampoo or while in the shower, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar prior to shampooing. With added products and knowledge in your beauty arsenal, this advice should have you feeling confident to take on any summer beauty challenge and have you ready to embrace your inner mermaid!
We all know the connotations of spring; renewal and looking forward, leaving the dark, dry and icy gloom of winter in our past. Springing forward and spring-cleaning apply not only to our homes and the length of our days but also to the health of our bodies, inside and out. Time to Exfoliate: if you don’t exfoliate head to toe on the regular, now’s the time to start. With winter’s dry heat our skin had a harder time with it’s own natural slothing and exfoliating process. Use a dry brushing method or a gentle body scrub to rid yourself of visible rough patches. You will have a closer shave and a more even sunless tanner application. Full body exfoliation promotes the growth of new healthy cells and also has the benefit of increasing circulation that may temporarily leave you feeling invigorated. If you choose a salt scrub you have the added mineral benefits as well as the fact that salt has anti-microbial properties and can help with blemish causing bacteria. Eat for the Season: To receive the optimum nutrient benefits we should always choose our produce seasonally. Asparagus’ unique properties make it a stand out. Glutathione, an antioxidant found in asparagus and cruciferous vegetables, protects your body from carcinogens. For your skin, this means that asparagus can protect cells from UV damage. Asparagine, an amino acid in asparagus, helps to flush excess fluid and salt from the body, which will relieve that sluggish feeling due to bloating. Schedule a Hair appointment: If you have not had an appointment with your stylist this entire winter book one ASAP. Now is the time to receive a trim and remove any split/dead ends. Rainy weather and a fresh blowout do not mix, so get creative with braids and buns. As the humidity increases it may be harder to maintain a pin-straight, flat ironed look if your hair is naturally curly. Equally frustrating is trying to keep bouncy curls from gong limp if your hair is naturally straight, so embrace your natural hair texture as the weather warms. Change formulas: As the seasons change you may need to switch up your products. Heavy moisturizers can be swapped for lightweight lotions if you are noticing an increase in oil or perspiration on the skin. If you were using a hair mask weekly during the cold season, you may need to skip a week if you notice your hair is becoming greasy faster. Spring Cleaning: No it’s not just for cleaning dusty corners or dirty windows in your home. Spring-cleaning applies to your beauty products. If you are not regularly washing your makeup brushes, now is the time to give them a good shampoo. Sun Protection: While we all know that we should be wearing an SPF year round, few do. As the weather warms and we ditch our gloves and heavy sweaters, more skin is revealed and being exposed to harmful UV rays. After years of stripped down approaches, introductions of all-in-one products and “easy” three step systems, there is a buzz in the states about a different mind-set when it comes to taking care of the skin: Layering, a trend that is already popular in Asia and France with upwards to 10, 11, even more steps of methodically layered products. With a different outlook, these countries spend millions more on skincare, while in the United States there is a different attitude; more money is spent on cosmetics and makeup. Covering up flaws rather than combating or preventing them to begin with. If we all suffered from less acne, dealt with less pigmentation issues and earlier on addressed fine lines/aging, would we spend less on makeup, too?It brings to mind images of women looking almost flawless upon waking up, walking out the door with only a BB cream and a swipe of lipstick, while we all look on in envy of her beauty, and only after we spent upwards to an hour painstakingly penciling in our brows and concealing countless blemishes. While we all know someone who only uses bar soap to wash their face and has no pores and is always glowing, the rest of us are in a constant battle with our skin. While you may not have the time or resources for a 10+step skin care regiment, adding one or more new products, or even knowing the correct order in which to use them, could make all the difference.Always apply products in accordance from light to heavy, thin to thick. Remember lighter products like serums are molecularly smaller when compared to heavier products like creams and moisturizers, and will absorb quickly and penetrate deeper. Creams will act to seal these products into the skin.Step 1: Makeup RemovalWhile this should go without saying, ALWAYS remove your makeup at night. At the very least use a makeup remover wipe. Some regular cleansers are gentle enough for use around the eye, or oil based makeup removers, which easily break down foundation and mascara.Step 2: CleanseFoaming or cream cleanser, depending on your skin type Step 3: ExfoliationThis can be done as a separate step with a physical exfoliant product, or with your regular cleanser in conjunction with your Clarisonic or FOREO Luna.Step 4: TonerWhile some are more astringent-like and strip excess oil, other toners or boosters soften the skin and prepare it to take on and absorb products to follow.Step 5: MaskThey come in a vast variety, whether it is a sheet mask, a gel, or clay mask. They address all types of issues from oily acneic skin, lack of hydration within the skin or hyperpigmentation to name a few. Masks are perfect for two to three day a week use.Step 6: Serums or EssencesJust like masks they come is a variety of textures, from completely water like to a gel, and address many different issues. Unlike masks, these products are used daily or twice daily. Some people believe it is crucial to apply these within seconds after washing the face and with a patting motion rather than rubbing into the face.Step 7: Eye creamWhether formulated with caffeine to tighten the under eye skin in the morning, or hydrating and antioxidant-rich for nighttime treatment use.Step 8: MoisturizeOily skin still needs moisture, so hydrating sprays or gel moisturizers are recommended for this skin type, while more mature and dry skin can benefit form a heavier cream or an oil based moisturizer.Step 9: Spot treatmentThis could be spot treating acne blemishes with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, or perhaps treating hyperpigmentation spots with hydroquinone or kojic acid.Step 10: Sun protectionThe last step to a morning skin care regiment should always be applying a broad spectrum SPF.  These basics to a layered skincare approach may help simplify what previously seemed like a daunting trial and error science experiment, and a bathroom counter riddled with bottles and jars of potions and promises.
