Myth 3: Rosacea is Contagious Fact - Rosacea cannot be caught. Myth 4: Rosacea = Acne Fact - Rosacea and acne are not the same. There are some common symptoms such as small, pus-filled red bumps, but the causes and treatment are different. Myth 5: Rosacea Is Caused by Heavy Drinking Drinking alcohol is a known Rosacea trigger but it is not the cause of the condition. Myth 6: Rosacea Is Caused by Consuming Spicy Foods Consuming spicy foods is a known Rosacea trigger but it is not the cause of the condition. Are dark eye circles leaving you feeling more ghoulish than glamorous? Darkness around the eyes is a very common beauty complaint. Many factors can contribute but luckily there are about just as many ways to combat this common issue, as there are causes. What Causes Dark Circles Around the Eyes? When you see a bluish hue around the eye, what you are actually seeing is oxygenated blood that has pooled or seeped out of blood vessels and is visible through the extremely thin skin around the orbital area of the eye. Many factors contribute to this problem. Some are beyond your control, while other contributing factors can be tackled. Heredity - it is common that if everyone else in your family has dark circles then chances are you will too. These can be bluish if you are fair skinned and the tissue is more transparent, or a darkened pigmentation if you are from Asian, Middle Eastern or African decent. Lifestyle - Bad habits like smoking, lack of exercise, fatigue and over exposure to the sun can lead to dark circles. Nasal Congestion and Allergies - When your body releases histamine this causes inflammation and swelling in the sinuses reducing blood flow. Rubbing your eyes can also aggravate issues. Aging - this natural process contributes to the loss of collagen. As we age we loose the fat in the eye area, which hides the blood from being visible. How do you Alleviate Dark Circles? At night sleep with your head propped up rather than lying completely flat or face down to prevent this blood from building up and pooling in the eye area. In the morning apply a cool compress or a frozen eye mask for five minutes. There are many vitamins and minerals you want to incorporate into your diet through fruits and vegetables and into your skin care to help the health of the eye area. Caffeine - an instant eye pick-me-up. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and can boost circulation. Hydrators - keeping this delicate tissue moisturized will improve the appearance of the skin. Ingredients like Hyaluronic acid plump the tissue. Retinols - Vitamin A can thicken the skin tissue to conceal. Vitamin C - brightens the skin and can lessen the appearance of sallow skin. Vitamin C is also involved in the production of collagen. Vitamin K - reduces inflammation and is used in bruise treatments. Iron - Blood is rich in iron but can be affected by menstrual cycle, pregnancy or anemia. Low iron can lead to paleness in the skin.Blog Written by askderm's in house Esthetician Chantal MoniqueChantal Monique is a NYS licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. Patchology is all about ‘The Power of The Patch’.  Patches + Technology= Patchology. Patchology is a great line of wonderful products that are known for leaving your skin with noticeable, long lasting results. These products aren’t to be used solo, but in addition to your daily skincare regimen.   With all the positive reviews that I found online and from those of my friends who have loved these products, I decided to try some out for myself.  I recently ordered Patchology’s FlashMasque, FlashPatch Eye Gels and Energizing Eye Introductory Kit and have been trying them for a couple of weeks and I absolutely love these products! Patchology FlashMasque Exfoliate These FlashMasque exfoliating masks feel so incredibly soothing and cool on your skin that you are left feeling smooth and revitalized.  The masks include Proprietary Hydrasurge5 Moisture System with lactic acid and papain which will gently exfoliate removing dead skin cells giving you a soft and polished look.  Even after the first application, your skin looks brighter and retextured and left with a hydrated glow.  It is recommended to apply on a gently cleansed, dried face for at least five minutes and followed by your normal skincare regimen.  I personally love the cooling and soothing feel it gives my face, that I leave it on about 20-30 minutes while lying in bed in the evening with a good book.  Once you remove the mask, there is no need to rinse your face, just rub the serum gently into your skin and that’s it.   Patchology FlashPatch Eye Gels The Patchology FlashPatch Eye are amazing!  I can’t tell you just how much I love these patches!  They are packed with caffeine and hydrolyzed collagen which smooths fine lines and wrinkles.  The Hydrogel Patch Technology helps revive tired, fatigued eyes leaving them deeply hydrated and smooth.  Apply on freshly washed and dried skin for at least five minutes.  I use mine in the morning and keep them on for about 20 minutes as I move around getting the kids ready for school.  The patches stay in place and once removed, there is no need to rinse, just rub the serum into the skin.  The FlashPatch smooths out lines so well and tightens the skin that when you’re wearing concealer and under eye foundation it applies super smooth and you are left with more awake, brighter looking skin.   Patchology Energizing Eye Introductory Kit Patchology Energizing Eye Introductory Kit is another great product for those with tired eyes.  When used on freshly washed, dried skin and applied for at least 20 minutes, your skin will be left looking and feeling smoother and refreshed.  The gentle ingredients will not only calm your skin, but with regular use will help diminish lines and wrinkles.  Once applied, the patches stay in place so you can carry on with whatever task you were doing and when removed, the eye patches can be used up to four times each.  This kit includes refreshing wipes, activating gel and eye treatments.  You instantly will see a difference in the brightness of your skin but the more you use the product the more refreshed and awake your eyes will look.  It definitely helps you look as you have gotten a few more hours of sleep (say goodbye to that just rolled out of bed look!). These are such great projects for all skin types and even those with sensitive skin as they have gentle ingredients that help soothe and calm your face.  Not only do they provide you with instant improvement of your skin, the more you use it the better your skin will look long term.  Renew your skin and get a healthier, brighter glow all year round!     Blog Written by askderm's Guest Esthetician  Stephanie Ivonne is a New Jersey licensed Esthetician.  Her fun-loving, outgoing personality will shine through her product selections & reviews to help you discover the hottest skincare and beauty products. After years of stripped down approaches, introductions of all-in-one products and “easy” three step systems, there is a buzz in the states about a different mind-set when it comes to taking care of the skin: Layering, a trend that is already popular in Asia and France with upwards to 10, 11, even more steps of methodically layered products. With a different outlook, these countries spend millions more on skincare, while in the United States there is a different attitude; more money is spent on cosmetics and makeup. Covering up flaws rather than combating or preventing them to begin with. If we all suffered from less acne, dealt with less pigmentation issues and earlier on addressed fine lines/aging, would we spend less on makeup, too?It brings to mind images of women looking almost flawless upon waking up, walking out the door with only a BB cream and a swipe of lipstick, while we all look on in envy of her beauty, and only after we spent upwards to an hour painstakingly penciling in our brows and concealing countless blemishes. While we all know someone who only uses bar soap to wash their face and has no pores and is always glowing, the rest of us are in a constant battle with our skin. While you may not have the time or resources for a 10+step skin care regiment, adding one or more new products, or even knowing the correct order in which to use them, could make all the difference.Always apply products in accordance from light to heavy, thin to thick. Remember lighter products like serums are molecularly smaller when compared to heavier products like creams and moisturizers, and will absorb quickly and penetrate deeper. Creams will act to seal these products into the skin.Step 1: Makeup RemovalWhile this should go without saying, ALWAYS remove your makeup at night. At the very least use a makeup remover wipe. Some regular cleansers are gentle enough for use around the eye, or oil based makeup removers, which easily break down foundation and mascara.Step 2: CleanseFoaming or cream cleanser, depending on your skin type Step 3: ExfoliationThis can be done as a separate step with a physical exfoliant product, or with your regular cleanser in conjunction with your Clarisonic or FOREO Luna.Step 4: TonerWhile some are more astringent-like and strip excess oil, other toners or boosters soften the skin and prepare it to take on and absorb products to follow.Step 5: MaskThey come in a vast variety, whether it is a sheet mask, a gel, or clay mask. They address all types of issues from oily acneic skin, lack of hydration within the skin or hyperpigmentation to name a few. Masks are perfect for two to three day a week use.Step 6: Serums or EssencesJust like masks they come is a variety of textures, from completely water like to a gel, and address many different issues. Unlike masks, these products are used daily or twice daily. Some people believe it is crucial to apply these within seconds after washing the face and with a patting motion rather than rubbing into the face.Step 7: Eye creamWhether formulated with caffeine to tighten the under eye skin in the morning, or hydrating and antioxidant-rich for nighttime treatment use.Step 8: MoisturizeOily skin still needs moisture, so hydrating sprays or gel moisturizers are recommended for this skin type, while more mature and dry skin can benefit form a heavier cream or an oil based moisturizer.Step 9: Spot treatmentThis could be spot treating acne blemishes with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, or perhaps treating hyperpigmentation spots with hydroquinone or kojic acid.Step 10: Sun protectionThe last step to a morning skin care regiment should always be applying a broad spectrum SPF.  These basics to a layered skincare approach may help simplify what previously seemed like a daunting trial and error science experiment, and a bathroom counter riddled with bottles and jars of potions and promises. Have you ever seen those terribly invasive photos of your favorite celebs on vacation frolicking in a bikini that were taken by paparazzi pointing out any imperfections that they may have? (I don’t even like taking pictures in a bikini let alone ones that I wasn’t prepared for!). No one is perfect…even famous A-list celebrities have cellulite. Cellulite isn’t just seen on overweight people but it also finds home on women of all different shapes and sizes. Unfortunately most men don’t have to deal with the cottage cheese looking lumps but the fact is that cellulite is found majority on women…9 out of 10 women to be exact! Those awful dimples appear on your thighs, bellies, buttocks and arms and when you least expect it (like in a photo of you that was just tagged on social media!...sigh). Cellulite occurs when fat is stored in pockets underneath the skin are pushed against tissues which creates a dimply, lumpy appearance. Even with massive weight loss, I still have those pesky pockets that seem to reduce not by just losing weight but by gaining muscle. If cellulite has been affecting you, here are some tips and tricks to help reduce its appearance. Drink your water. Not only should you be drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily for your health as well as great hair and skin but drinking water keeps your skin plump and supple which will help fill out the indents. Daily dry brushing. I absolutely love dry brushing as a great exfoliant that leaves your skin feeling softer and smoother. Dry brushing opens your pores, stimulates blood flow and when brushing in a upwards circular motion it also helps tighten skin. For best results do twice daily before your shower. Body scrubs. Body scrubs are great to use a few times a week to fix skin’s texture and smooth away rough patches but also it improves circulation which helps with the excess fluid that is stored under the skin’s surface. Eat healthier. I know it’s easier said than done sometimes but eating healthier does really help with losing fat and reducing cellulite. I’m not saying swear off your favorite slice of pizza but start monitoring your sugar and sodium intake. Too much sodium will leave you with noticeable water retention. Take your Omega 3s. Omega 3s come in capsules as well in a variety of food items. Including Omega 3’s good fatty acid in your diet will help smooth your skin and help your tissues reducing the appearance of the pockets. Eat your Flaxseed. I include flaxseed in everything from my overnight oatmeal, to a smoothie to tablespoons sprinkled in when I’m cooking. Flaxseed not only tastes great but is really good for you. It helps stimulate collagen growth and balance estrogen and hormone levels. Total win/win situation. Just like always…don’t forget your spf. You need spf during all seasons, different weather and for various reasons on why you should protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Reason #1342 of why you need to wear SPF, UV rays damage collagen thinning out the skin and allowing for cellulite to appear much, much more than it should. Anti-Cellulite Creams. I absolutely love these creams! These anti-cellulite creams are practically an instant fix once used for consecutive days you really start noticing a difference. These creams include Retinol, Vitamin A and caffeine which helps stimulate collagen and dehydrate excess fluid retention. Tip to help absorb the cream better use plastic wrap around the area over the cream for twenty minutes or so. Balance Hormones. Regardless of what stage of your life you’re in…teenager, young adult, middle age, mature…no matter how old you are, you should get your hormones checked and balanced. Unbalanced hormones will lead to everything from weight gain, hair loss, mood swings, tiredness as well as excess fat that turns into cellulite. See your doctor and see what vitamins are right for you. Work that Body! If you don’t workout, you won’t gain muscle which will greatly help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Find your favorite workouts and start lifting weights which will help burn fat and build muscles. My favorite workouts are kick boxing, weight lifting and also a kettlebell workout…no Zumba or jazzercise for this girl! There are many other ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite including laser treatments that cost thousands and thousands of dollars to other surgeries and procedures that will help vanish the pockets and dimples. But these are some simple tips that you can incorporate into your already busy lifestyle without having to spend an arm and a leg or any downtime. Grab some of your girlfriends and take a kickboxing class or have a gym buddy to make it more fun but just keep moving, eating healthy and drinking that water!   Blog Written by askderm's Guest Esthetician  Stephanie Ivonne is a New Jersey licensed Esthetician.  Her fun-loving, outgoing personality will shine through her product selections & reviews to help you discover the hottest skincare and beauty products. What’s not to love about the 4th of July? Barbecues, pool parties, beach bonfires, fireworks…all of these things are such a fun way of celebrating ‘Murica! Unfortunately the fun that we have on July 4th can often wreck havoc on July 5th but don’t worry! Here is your fool proof guide to slaying July 4th and surviving July 5th. Suns out Buns Out Whether your outfit of choice for the 4th is a bikini or a flowy dress, one thing is for sure…we tend to show more skin and spend more time outdoors on the 4th than we do the rest of the year. As long as we have proper sun protection and remember to reapply we can enjoy the great outdoors as much as we want! I recommend starting off the day using La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral all over your body especially the areas that aren’t going to be covered up. I know that I will most likely be wearing makeup on the 4th so a big hangup for a lot of us with reapplication is messing up our look! That’s why the Avene High Protection Compact in SPF 50 is the perfect solution not only to protect your skin but also to mattify your makeup if you start to sweat throughout the day. I prefer to apply with a powder brush so I get more sheer coverage but a makeup pad works well too! A lot of people think that you only need to tend to skin that has gotten some sun if you have gotten sunburned. However even if you aren’t sunburned sun damage can still occur. I love using the Avene After-Sun Repair Creamy Gel whether I have an island glow or a ripe tomato look by the end of the day. Unfortunately the process of getting a tan from the sun can harm your natural moisture barrier, lead to hyperpigmentation and make you lose elasticity so this amazing gel can act as your personal body guard against all of those signs of aging. It’s also paraben and silicone free as well as hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. The best thing to do is apply it as soon as you can after sun exposure ESPECIALLY after the shower. Rosé All Day…Until Bedtime As one of the top 3 heaviest drinking days of the year in the US,  the 5th of July can make us regretful of the partying the day before. But if we properly prepare then we can slay the 4th AND the 5th. First things first…the main reason why we get hangovers is because of the LARGE amounts of simple sugars that make up alcoholic beverages including shots of hard liquor.  We all know the physical feeling of being hungover but that can also leave your skin looking tired and even lead to premature aging. I always take collagen, calcium and hyaluronic acid supplements because these are the main compounds that our skin uses to heal itself like the Murad Youth Builder (Anti-aging Dietary Supplement.  Because sugar breaks down the collagen in our skin I would highly recommend jumping on the skin supplement bandwagon as well. Something that we all have done at least once is have so much fun celebrating during the day that once bedtime comes we don’t have the energy to take off our makeup and  cleanse our skin. Whether you’re prone to breakouts or not leaving on your makeup can lead to premature skin aging, tired skin, hyper pigmentation and other not so flattering results. Whether you’re staying over at a friend’s house or going home at the end of the night DO NOT GO TO BED without using BRYT Remove Eye and Makeup Remover. Not only does it get rid of your makeup but it also has skin loving oils and antioxidants that will help heal your skin while you’re asleep. After removing your makeup and cleansing don’t forget to moisturize while you’re asleep! You guys know how into supplements I am and I just found my newest obsession! A big problem with anti-aging skincare lines is that if you don’t technically have maturing skin then anti-aging products can really flare you up as far as acne goes because your skin is already producing the amount of “good stuff” that it needs so it gets overwhelmed by the product. The Cura Complexion Catalyst Creme provides all of those anti aging benefits without using traditional anti aging ingredients so feel free to smooth this on after a day of sun drinking and partying no matter your age! As we mentioned earlier calcium is a compound that your body naturally uses to heal itself and Cura Skincare uses calcium in their skincare line! This cream also uses caffeine to help stimulate skin cell renewal, Colloidal oatmeal to help sooth your skin and prevent moisture loss as well as other supercharged ingredients. “I Think I’m Going to Call in Sick” Despite our best efforts whether it’s lack of sleep, dehydration, sun damage or just not being able to adult today don’t let hungover skin be the reason to skip work on July 5th. Timeless Beauty Bar Face the Day Sheet Mask is the perfect boost that you need after cleansing before work to help you have a good skin day. Not only is it hydrating but it also reduces redness, soothes and restores your skin so that you can take on the day! Now that you have your skin arsenal set up make sure to be have fun, be safe and party like there is no tomorrow! Happy 4th of July!
Yes, it’s true! What you put in your body shows up on your face, and for that reason we should all be aware of foods that we can eat or eat MORE of to give our skin an extra boost from the inside out. Discover these 7 foods that boost great skin care. It won’t be hard to work these delicious yet skin healthy foods into your diet. Discover some tips and tricks on how to incorporate these skin-healthy foods both into your diet and skin care (because playing with food is fun too)! #1 - Strawberries, Blueberries, and Kiwi These fruits and berries make the list because not only are they oh so yummy, they also have a lot of vitamin C and antioxidants which are key in keeping your skin looking its best. Vitamin C stimulates the production of collagen which keeps the skin looking young by plumping it up and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. Not only does it boost collagen, the vitamins and antioxidants in these fruits combat free radicals which are not only unhealthy in general, but make your skin look older by causing skin damage. For a quick boost, throw some of these bad boys into a salad or a smoothie. Better yet, enjoy them by the handful as a healthy snack. #2 - Pumpkin Consuming pumpkin regularly means you are consuming beta-carotene or as your body likes to call it, vitamin A. Vitamin A is important to the skin because it helps the body produce new skin cells. When your skin cell turnover is good, you end up with softer, brighter, less wrinkled skin! This is the perfect excuse to eat more of those pumpkin treats we all love in the fall. Just make sure it has REAL pumpkin in it and isn’t just “pumpkin flavored.” Exfoliate with Peter Thomas Roth's Clinical Peel & Reveal that is formulated with a pumpkin enzyme to naturally sweep pore clogging dead skin cells. Reveal dramatically rejuvenated, revitalized and radiant skin. #3 - Green Tea Putting green tea on here might seem like old news, but it is such good news so I had to! I would literally try green tea anything, so good news for me and for rest of the green tea lovers; it's good for your skin! Green tea, like our first foods on the list, fights free radicals that can cause premature aging and skin cancer. Additionally, it is an anti-inflammatory, so say goodbye to redness and inflamed acne. Green tea is also my favorite substitute for coffee, so whether you are trying to cut back on the coffee intake or you just prefer tea, opt for green tea next time and watch those little leaves go to work! Enjoy the benefits of green tea with the Green Tea Antioxidant Moisturizing Lotion by Replenix. This antioxidant blend includes Green Tea Polyphenols, Caffeine, Bisabolol to smooth and soothe dry, irritated skin. #4 - Olive Oil …And all the pasta lovers rejoiced! Now, olive oil is one I prefer to use topically just because it has so many applications that way and the variety of masks and scrubs seems almost endless. However, putting it on pasta or in salads is also very beneficial. Olive oil has tons of anti-aging antioxidants and is, of course, super hydrating. So next time you think about cooking in butter, grab the olive oil instead (cold pressed olive oil, actually) and splash it on salads and pasta instead of using dressings and sauces high in sugars and fats. Remove make-up, sweep away dirt and oil and visibly reduce the appearance of enlarged pores with Rodial's Super Acids X-Treme Pore Shrink Cleansing Pads. Your skin will be instantly refreshed from the blend of gentle apple amino acids mixed with olive oil and salicylic acid. #5 -Chia Seeds These little seeds have been taking the health food world by storm. For a while, I swear, I heard a new thing that chia seeds could do for you, every day for two weeks straight! But hey, I jumped on the chia seed bandwagon, and I think everyone should. Look out beauty world, chia seeds are moving in! Why? Because these little guys have tons of antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, potassium, phosphorus, and chia oil is great if your skin needs a moisture boost (and is good for sensitive skin also). All these good things and so much more is what makes the chia seed great for combating acne, redness, wrinkles, it helps balance skin and helps keep it looking soft and smooth. You can put these seeds in smoothies, make a chia seed pudding (Google it and thank me later), put them in salads and even in drinks that you don’t mind a little bit of texture in. Lastly, as a little bonus and word to the wise, try to make sure to avoid consuming too many dairy products; the hormones in dairy can cause acne and inflammation (I'm talking about you, ice cream). Also, aim for foods low on the glycemic index, which measures how quickly carbs are turned into glucose in the body. Foods high on the glycemic index are bad because they cause your blood sugar to spike and can cause inflammation and breakouts along with other problems… it’s just not good! Mostly remember this, as I said before, what you put in your body shows up on your face. So just make sure to eat a well-rounded and healthy diet, stock up on ingredients that are skin loving and enjoy beautiful, healthy skin all year long!       Blog Written by askderm's Beauty Blogger Sydney Nichole is a self-proclaimed beauty nerd.  She stays on top of the latest makeup, hair, and beauty trends. With each passing year the skin care market for men is growing. What was once a minuscule section of aftershaves has turned into row after row of cobalt blue and gunmetal color packaging with bold type faces. So how do you choose what products are worth it and how do you break through the hype?Men’s Needs can DifferThere are several common issues men deal with regards to their skin:Oil and Acne: Sebum, the oily skin lubricant, is produced within the follicle. Because guys have more hair on their face, they subsequently can produce more oil. Men are more likely to participate in physical work that causes more sweat. If skin is not properly washed or there is lax approach to hygiene, bacteria and oil get trapped within the follicle leading to breakouts. Generally men do not see a reason to be as nit picky as women. Before you know it, you are in the gym on the treadmill, you have taken your germ-covered hand to wipe the sweat from your brow and have deposited bacteria directly into your dilated pores. Oh and that beanie or baseball cap you have been wearing for years? Yes it is the reason you have pimples across your forehead and hairline.Folliculitis: This is a bacteria infection within the follicle. It is characterized by whitehead pustules around the hair accompanied by inflammation and can be painful. Severe cases are treated by a dermatologist, with the use of antibiotic or anti-fungal/ yeast medication. Folliculitis has a lesser evil but never the less annoying little brother, pseudofolliculitis, you know this as razor rash or razor bumps. This occurs when facial hairs start to grow curled into the skin due to shaving. It has the appearance of red bumps and ingrown hairs. Changing you shaving technique can eliminate this problem.Dry Skin/Dehydrated Skin: Skin that is dry and tight can be genetic or environmental. Some people naturally have dry skin but many other factors can contribute to this issue. If while taking a nearly scalding hot shower, you are choosing to use a certain overly scented green bar of soap on your face, then it is no wonder upon toweling off that your face feels so tight and uncomfortable. Bad habits such as over exposure to the sun and smoking will also dry out the skin. After 8 years in the skin care industry this is what I have learned about men:They cannot be bothered by having to deal with far to many products or too many multiple steps.Men are more likely over women to discontinue the use of a product solely because they do not like the feel or scent of it.Contrary to the two points I just touched on, I embrace men as an important part of my clientele because men are more likely to be consistent when following an estheticians instructions. They are some of my most loyal client base and like to adhere to a consistent schedule; this same mindset can overlap into grooming and skin care.If you are a guy interested in starting a skin care routine or you are trying to get your man into skin care, here are a few key pointers:Keep it simple and multitask. I would start with only two products, a cleanser and a moisturizer. A cleanser needs to not only remove surface oil but help exfoliate, so choose something that contains AHAs, BHAs or a gentle physical exfoliant. Please stay away from cleansers that have large grit to them. Men tend to be overly rough and excessive scrubbing can lead to, or aggravate an existing condition. The moisturizer should be soothing enough for use post shaving but also contain a broad spectrum SPF.While “For Men” products are formulated to be more quickly absorbing and to have a more attractive packaging, don’t discount the effectiveness of other products. If you have been secretly using your wife’s facial wash in the shower and you love it, don’t stop! My Recommendations for Shaving:Shave after you shower and not before. While in the shower the moisture softens the hair leading to an easier shave. If you consistently have sensitivity to shaving, shave with the hair growth, not against the grain. An electric razor is another option for sensitive skin types.Razors with five blades may be a bit much.  While for some it is the closest shave they can get, other guys find that the friction caused by multiple blades can lead to irritation. My Favorites for Men willing to go Beyond Just a Basic Cleanse:FOREO Luna for Men- Whether you have sensitive skin or you are a gadget guru, this device preps the skin for shaving, helping you get a closer shave and with less razor burn. It takes the place of an exfoliant wash. Exfoliated skin appears more even in tone. It is less likely to have clogged pores and more easily absorbs moisturizers and aftershaves. Turo skin Daily Moisturizing Lotion + SPF 15- This lotion is a true multi-tasker. It sooths and moisturizes the skin post shaving all while protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful rays.Obagi ELASTIderm Eye Complete Complex Serum- This anti-aging serum is in an easy to use roller-ball style pen applicator. The roller-ball remains cool to the touch to help sooth eyes. Caffeine reduces puffiness and tightens the skin making you appear more awake and ready to take on the day. While getting some guys to even wash their face is a gigantic task, others are willing to follow some sort of skin care regiment. The bottom line with men is there cannot be major time and money invested to only yield unnoticeable results.  Blog Written by askderm's in house Esthetician Chantal MoniqueChantal Monique is a NYS licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist.      Gorgeous, healthy skin is achieved from a wide range of influences. Genes definitely play a large role, however, your daily habits are much more important! Are you drinking enough water? Do you spend significant hours in the sun? There are tons of recommendations, product reviews, and even personal opinions all over the internet guiding you in multiple directions. Let us help you to sift through all of this information, so you can decide exactly what products are right for your personal skincare routine. Make sure to follow us @askderm on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter to be the first to know all of our exciting news! The Keys to a Successful, Complete Routine: Cleanse - Remove excess oil, dirt, and impurities. Tone - Balance your pH levels for refreshed skin. Moisturize - Provide your skin with the hydration it needs to keep you looking your best. Protect - Regular SPF application is key to providing your skin with the ultimate protection for youthful longevity. Your personal skincare routine should protect all of your favorite qualities, while simultaneously targeting problem areas like uneven skin tone, blemishes, or aging. It should also provide regular nourishment to regulate the skin for a comfortable, healthy complexion. Remember that there is no magic wand when it comes to your skin, changes take time. Before moving on to the next product, allow at least 6 weeks of regular use for changes and improvements to take place. The biggest key to healthy skin is simple - consistency. Do you know your skin type? Before getting started with your routine, it’s crucial to know your skin type and goals. Are you oily and looking to fight initial signs of aging? Dry and focusing on your uneven skin tone? Take a few minutes to determine this and you are much more likely to achieve the skin you desire. Today’s post is written in the order of application. Ensure all of your products are applied based on the below recommendations for optimal results! CLEANSER Cleansers are used to remove makeup, dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and pollutants. This step refreshes the skin, and also allows it to better absorb the remaining products in your skincare routine. For best results, make sure you are completing this step twice a day. Most importantly, do not confuse exfoliators with cleansers. Exfoliation should only be performed one to two times per week, and its purpose is to brush away dull, dead cells for a smoother finish.  Skin Type Cleanser Type What to Expect Product Recommendation Dry, Irritated, Red Cream/Lotion Very gentle, and will not strip away oils but rather seals in moisture for lasting protection.  Sensitive Oil/Cream Good oils are used to remove the bad oils left on the skin's surface. Often containing a wide array of natural oils to prevent and treat existing irritation. Oily, Acne Prone Foaming Liquid A light and airy product that's effective without feeling heavy or too intense for your fragile skin. Mature Liquid Impurity removal without stripping away your valuable natural oils to ensure a cleansed yet balanced surface. TONER Toners have definitely evolved over the years, and they are filled with amazing benefits. This is not necessarily a mandatory step, however if you are serious about your skincare routine it is definitely recommended. Toners give you that extra level of attention and ensure all makeup or other heavy products have been completely removed. They also aid in minimizing the appearance of pores for a smoother, more even texture. If you have oily skin, toner is great for balancing out your pH levels which results in less excess sebum and the appearance of normal looking skin for much longer throughout the day. Did you know? Toners are available in multiple forms. In addition to the most common cotton pad application, you can even pour a small amount into clean hands and apply, or opt for a spray bottle formulation. SERUM There is a serum for everyone, and this step is sure to be your favorite! Serums are highly concentrated and deliver powerful ingredients deep into the layers of the skin. The molecular structure is small, which is perfect for many skin concerns like wrinkles, acne scars, dark spots, and more. Look for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Retinol, and Peptides. Helpful Tip: Don’t mix products! Each step of your skincare routine is meant to be applied individually. Give each product the chance to absorb before moving on to the next step. This will insure you are getting the most out of each step and not diluting anything for less than desirable results. Also make sure you focus on antioxidants in the AM and Retinols at night! MOISTURIZER Moisturizers keep your skin from drying out and help it to retain moisture, in addition to providing a protective barrier against the environment. Ingredients vary greatly depending on your specific skin type and needs, which is another reason it’s important to know your personal requirements and goals. This step is also crucial to fighting wrinkles which helps you to maintain a youthful and radiant complexion.  Skin Type Moisturizer Type What to Expect Product Recommendation Dry, Irritated, Red Cream A larger oil content than lotion, which deeply nourishes and hydrates the skin. Commonly used in cold seasons or dry climates. Sensitive Lotion A lightweight, and fragrance free formula to provide a moderate amount of moisture without weighing down the skin. Oily, Acne Prone Gel The ideal amount of hydration, will quickly absorb. Water based and lightweight formula. Mature Balm An all-in-one formula to protect against multiple ailments and encourage well balanced, radiant skin.   Day Cream VS Night Cream: The biggest difference between a day cream and a night cream is protecting vs. repairing. Daytime moisturizers are formulated to shield you against environment aggressors like sun damage and free radicals, while night time products will contain ingredients like retinol to increase cell turnover as well as boost moisture levels. Can you get away with just one moisturizer for both day time and night time? Definitely. But, like the rest of your overall health, putting in the extra work is sure to show. EYE CREAM The skin around the eyes is incredibly delicate, and requires extra attention. It’s important to note that products which work seamlessly for the rest of your face may cause irritation to the eyes. The skin in this area is more sensitive than the rest of the face, and if you give it a little extra attention now you will be very happy you did in just a few years from now. Choose eye creams that contain Caffeine, Hyaluronic Acid, Neuropeptides, and Vitamin C and E. Make sure to avoid fragrance or any harsh additives. SUNSCREEN Apply, apply, apply! It may seem repetitive to hear this, but that is because it truly is that important. Serious conditions like cancer can occur, as well as less serious but still unwelcome effects like fine lines, wrinkles, an increase in pore size, dark spots, and more. To save time, choose a daily moisturizer with SPF built in! Make sure you’re using an SPF of at least 30 to protect against harmful rays. There are even several foundation options on the market with SPF included for makeup wearers. A common misconception is that SPF isn’t needed for rainy or cold days, or for those who only spend a small amount of time outside. However, regardless of your daily routine, SPF is still a crucially important key to healthy, youthful, and glowy skin. SKINCARE TOOLS Facial brushes are an amazing choice for anyone looking for a deeper clean than what is possible with traditional methods. All skin types benefit from a motorized brush! The pulsations stimulate blood flow, dislodge impurities, and provide a spa-like experience. You will also notice a smoother, more even surface due to the daily gentle exfoliation.
