Sun Exposure Aftercare
This year’s summer chapter may be drawing to a close, but there is still plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors safely. For some of you, that may also mean trying to catch every last ray of sunshine you can grab hold of! If you find yourself committing the number one skincare no-no, allowing yourself to become sunburned, here is what to do…
As soon as you notice your skin is red or pink, remove yourself, get out of the sun and go indoors.
Apply a cold and damp compress to the area for several minutes.
If you do not have an allergy or drug complications take aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve pain and inflammation.
Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
When is a sunburn more serious?
If you or a loved one has a sunburn accompanied by a fever, headache, vomiting, dizziness, dehydration, lethargy, the chills or a general feeling of illness, contact your doctor immediately. You could be experiencing sun poisoning and may need professional care.
Further at home treatment is helpful.
Avoid hot showers, saunas or hot tubs.
Shower with cool water. Gently pat yourself dry and apply a product specifically formulated for post-sun care, like Aloe gel or my current favorite, COOLA’s Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion.
Leave any blisters alone and avoid picking or popping.
Protect burns from further UV exposure by covering with loose fitted clothing.
Once the skin is completely healed you can resume any exfoliating which may also aid in preventing visible hyperpigmentation.
How to avoid further burns:
Avoid and limit sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
Seek shady spots while outdoors.
Wear protective clothing, hats and glasses.
Apply sunscreen thoroughly and often.
Enjoy the final days of summer safely!
