Summer Skin Care Do’s and Dont’s by S. Vitalone, Esthetician
Summer Skincare Do’s -After cleansing, use a toner appropriate for your skin type. Toners help to remove excess dirt, makeup, and oils from the skin as well as balance or rehydrate mature skin. -Use a lighter moisturizer than the one you use in the winter. This will keep the skin well hydrated without feeling heavy or greasy. -Always, always, always wear sunblock. Broad-spectrum SPF 20 or higher is a good choice. -Using scrubs on the face can produce microtears in the skin that can lead to uneven pigmentation if you’re exposed to the sun. A much better approach is to use a cleanser and/or moisturizer with an alpha-hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid. These exfoliate, improving the skin’s tone and texture. -Change your foundation to a more sheer coverage and add a little shimmer like the Jane Iredale 24-Karat Gold Mine Shimmers Collection which has 6 different colors for summer wear. Add a little gold dust or pink or bronze to the cheek area instead of blush. Try the lilac or champagne on the brow bone for added sparkle to your eyes. -Make sure you don’t forget hydration for your body. Body washes and lotions are a big hit in the summer. Take a look at a new product we just picked up called Avotone Leg & Body Sheen. This mousse gives you an all over sun-kissed look without a self-tanner. Washes off in the shower and won’t come off on your clothes. We just love it here! This item is HOT and going fast.
Summer Skincare Don’ts -Avoid loading up on cream based products in the summer unless your skin is extremely dry. This will not only clog pores but many times you will find your makeup not adhering well. -If you are looking to have some summer color whether it be self-tanning products or the real deal "sun", don’t overload on exfoliators such as alpha hydroxy acids or polyhydroxy acids. Daily use of exfoliators will remove the upper layers of skin and your color along with it. -Steer clear of products containing Mineral Oil or Petrolatum. Shea Butter is usually one to avoid as well unless you are super dry. -Be aware of alcohol-based products that will strip the natural oils and usually cause the skin to overcompensate by producing more oil. Salicylic acid based products are usually a better choice in hot, humid weather. Good cleanser choices are Celazome Botanical Purifying Cleanser and Revision Alpha Cleanser. Toners to choose would be Medicalia Clarifying Toner or Cosmolara Bio-Sequence End Fatigue Cosmotoner.
