Guest Blog: "Combating Cosmetic Fatigue" by Dr. Annette Tobia, CEO & President of MEG 21

Many women these days suffer from cosmetic fatigue: so many products, so many promises, and so much fuss and feathers following complex "protocols" to apply them. Let's not even mention the break-the-bank investment. The skin-care market has become a bottomless money pit which soaks up money faster than you can say, "voila, beautiful, healthy skin."

We thought about all this 10 years ago as we worked at the renowned Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia with a team of scientists searching for a treatment for the accelerated aging diseases associated with diabetes. To our scientific surprise, we developed Supplamine, which in seven clinical trials has been proven to reduce the visible signs of skin aging in 14 days. Shortly, thereafter we launched the MEG 21 with Supplamine product line.

MEG 21 targets prevention and correction of Glycation, a natural and unavoidable process which occurs in everyone, and refers to the attachment of simple sugars to protein. This starts a chain of events ending in the formation of Advanced Glycation End products, or AGE's - aptly named! AGE's eventually interfere with normal function of proteins. This process can occur in most proteins but is especially noticeable in those not replaced often such as collagen and elastin. AGE's can lead to decreased elasticity, increased signs of aging, and increased inflammation. Prevention of AGE's by targeting glycation will prevent these alterations to the skin.

The women on the scientific team, like women today, are busy people, with careers to build, children to tend to, domestic chores to run and, oh yes, an occasional fun party to attend.   I guess the women on the scientific team were determined to develop a product which was not only effective and enhanced skin health but was easy and quick to use.  So we developed a formula which reduces glycation, oxidative stress, and inflammation, while increasing moisturization and smoothing skin to give it a youthful wow! We wanted MEG 21 to be the do-it-all, do-it-well product line.

So, unless you have unlimited patience, time and money, check out MEG 21 products.  You'll avoid cosmetic fatigue and look younger faster.

6 Beauty Tips: How To Change Your Skincare For Summer

It is hot and humid. I am blotting my face like I will get paid for every oil-absorbing sheet I pluck from my purse. I felt like I just got my skin balanced and before I knew it, summer was here to challenge my ego. It is time for a skincare overhaul! I know I am not alone; here is what you need to know when it comes to summer skincare and hair care.

Change your products
Forgo heavy full coverage foundations. Instead opt for tinted moisturizers, BB or CC creams and a light dusting of mineral powder.

The creamy face wash you were using all winter may be too much. Switch to a gel based formulation if you tend to be on the oily side.

Change your routine
You may need to exfoliate more or less. Never exfoliate skin that is burned or red and irritated. If your skin become more sensitive during the warmer months you may want to decrease the number of times you exfoliate within the week. On the flipside, hot and humid weather can exacerbate oil production and pores may be more visible. Adding just one more exfoliation to your week may help.

Quench your Skin
Moisturizer and lotions are still important to use daily during the warmer weather, just make sure to switch to an oil-free formulation. If you have oily skin your first reaction may be to forgo any moisturizer what so ever, but this is not going to help. A lack of moisture can send your sebaceous glands into overdrive, producing more oil to lubricate and protect your skin.

Hydrating mists are great for cooling down, calming the skin and adding hydration throughout the day. I love keeping a mist in my fridge, or throwing it into a cooler while at the beach or on a boat.

Unleash your locks
Summer is not the time to try and fight your hairs natural texture. Youtube is a great resource to learn quick and easy hairstyles that embrace your hair type.

Because you are sweating more and you are applying your sunscreen right up to your hairline like you are suppose to, dry shampoos are a great way to freshen your style, absorb oil and add volume to limp locks.

UV rays don't just damage your skin; they can take a toll on your hair, especially color treated hair. Make sure you wear a hat, a scarf or take time to relax under an umbrella.

Protect yourself from the inside out
Studies show that the antioxidants in many fruits and vegetables not only fight free radical damage but also actually boost your skin's ability to protect itself from the sun! So challenge yourself to consume more fruits and vegetables with every meal.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen..
Sunscreens take time to absorb and begin to work, so as always choose a broad spectrum SPF, apply it 20 minutes prior to exposure and make sure you reapply every 90 minutes!

Now that you have the knowledge of beautiful summer skin and hair - slip into that swimsuit, grab that floppy hat and hit the beach!

Sunless tanning 101

I have accepted that I am pasty, no correct that, practically see-through. While I have tried sunless tanning, it just is not for me. Truth be known I spend way to much time already doing my makeup, my hair and picking out my clothes, that my loved ones and friends would kill me if I took any longer to get out the door! Sunless tanning does have its benefits though- you appear thinner and skin imperfections are less noticeable. There is also that added benefit of avoiding melanoma, the deadliest cancer! Every season I offer my clients a cheat sheet with tips & tricks to getting that glow, without the sun and now I will share all those helpful tips with my askderm audience!
How to NOT look like Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars"
Perform a test patch first. The active ingredient in sunless tanner is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) a sugar that reacts with dead skin cells to produce pigment.  You want to make sure you are not allergic to it or any of the other ingredients in the product before slathering it all over your entire body.

Remove hair & exfoliate: Use a loofa, exfoliating mitts or a washcloth to remove excess dead skin cells. This will prevent a patchy look. Shave as you would normally. If you wax, make sure this is done a day or two prior to your tanner application. Waxing removes hair from the root, leaving the follicle empty and you do not want tiny dark spots all over your legs.

Avoid dry skin: Depending on the formulation of your tanner you may want to apply a body lotion prior to application. Concentrate on the areas of the body that are more commonly dry as these will absorb more of the product and you could end up with dark uneven spots. These areas include- hands, wrists, sole of feet, elbows and knees. Avoid any moisturizer that is oil based as this could result in a streaking effect or prevent your tanner from penetrating.

Keep your hands from becoming orange: Either wear gloves to apply product or vigorously wash your hands immediately after application.

Apply to one body part at a time: Be conscious when applying to make sure you apply evenly and don't miss any areas.

Face bronzing: To achieve a beautiful bronzed look with makeup, we apply bronzer to the perimeter of the face and where the sun would hit the highest points- the center of the forehead, the cheeks and nose. This makeup trick applies to sunless tanning too. Apply product to these areas first before blending into the entire face. When using sunless tanner on the face avoid the eyebrows and the upper lip, otherwise you could end up looking like you have no clue when it comes to picking out an eyebrow pencil and that you have pregnancy mask (melasma). Remember that because the face receives more washing and exfoliating on a regular basis, than the rest of your body, you will need to apply sunless tanner to your face more often to maintain the look.

After Sunless tanning application: Wear loose fitting clothing to avoid the color from rubbing off. Because color can transfer choose dark or old clothing you are not concerned about staining. It is preferable to apply tanning products at night, so choose dark sheets and bedding, or all white cotton that can be bleached in the washer.

If you have always been curious but hesitant about trying sunless tanner, these tips should have you feeling like a pro and if it keeps you from baking yourself outside or in a tanning bed, then all the better!

Introducing MDSolarSciences

We all know the importance of proper sun protection and it will remain a constant subject within my posts and videos for askderm.com. What I am continually impressed by is the advances within sunscreen technologies. Micro particlization has allowed for improvements in absorption and the feel of sun products, MDSolarSciences is no exception.

I was first introduced to the three Mineral Cremes; 30, 50 and tinted. Immediately I fell in love. The texture of these physical sunscreens is dreamy! All three containing Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, physical sun blockers that are far less likely to irritate sensitive skin, unlike some ingredients in chemical sun screens. They have a mousse like texture that is comparable to many BB creams. Yet they immediately absorb, there is no sticky feel and they are matte. My other favorite sun protection product offered is the Quick Dry Body Spray, SPF 40. There are many sunscreen sprays that claim to be quick drying, yet they still leave a greasy feel after the propellant has evaporated. I quickly set out to convert sunscreen non-believers and those who may just not have been previously exposed to a product with this great of a texture. From a general contractor, to a zookeeper, I have forced people to try this sunscreen. Everyone agrees the texture is fantastic!

MDSolarSciences is not only concerned with the health of your skin, but also the health of our environment. MDSolarSciences has worked to eliminate chemicals within their sunscreen brand to not contribute to the destruction of coral reefs. They consulted with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) so that they can scientifically be as safe as possible.

I would order this sunscreen by the case!  Anyone in my personal life, who receives MDSolarSciences sunscreen from me this summer, should consider it a sign of love!

The Dangers of Tanning Beds

The commercials for indoor tanning salons use the adjectives "healthy" and "beautiful". Melanoma is not beautiful. Solar elastosis, that saggy skin with excessive wrinkling, is not beautiful. Vanity is the sole purpose behind tanning and vanity will ultimately be what you will loose in the end! Brazil, a country known for golden beauties in tiny bikinis has completely outlawed the practice of indoor tanning. Many states within the U.S. and my many countries around the world now prohibit the use of tanning beds by minors under 18.

The CDC has concluded that the use of indoor tanning beds, even for the sole purpose of achieving a base tan, is not a safe or effective way of protecting yourself from the sun. A tan is not safe and bares little difference from a sunburn in that both indicate injury from UV radiation. A tan is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong.

The Truth-
  • Indoor tanning causes more cancer annually than cigarette smoking!
  • Indoor tanning users are 75% more likely to develop melanoma, than those who do not tan.

As an esthetician I have heard it all:

"But I only use tanning beds containing special bulbs that are not harmful."
You have been lied to! Even if a tanning bed only used UVA radiation, this is still not safe. UVA radiation is responsible for aging the skin and now there is much more data that links UVA to the development of skin cancers. The person behind the counter at a tanning salon may tell you this myth, unfortunately because of false marketing they may be passing along inaccurate information they have been duped into believing themselves.

"You need vitamin D and tanning beds give you vitamins your body needs."
The average person only needs about 15-20 minutes of exposure to receive enough UV rays for their body to produce vitamin D. A much safer way to receive this vitamin is to eat food rich in vitamin D or foods that have been fortified.

These food sources include:

  • Fatty Fish
  • Mushrooms
  • Cow's milk/Cheese/Yogurt
  • Almond Milk
  • Fortified Orange Juice
  • Egg Yolks

" I have to go tanning, otherwise I feel depressed."
It is true that for some people, tanning causes an endorphin releasing effect. You know what also creates a feel-good chemical release? Exercise! Exercise stimulates neurotransmitters, boosting your mood and health without the risk of cancer and excessively aged skin.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer and yet it is the most preventable! For reliable resources concerning the dangers of tanning beds and UV radiation, refer to these websites:

Product Review: DS Laboratories Revita. EPS

One of the most common beauty complaints I hear from clients has to do with sparse lashes or of thinning lashes as one ages. I was sent the eyelash stimulator for review purposes. My lashes and brows were photographed prior to my first application and then again on the completion of the product pen.

I applied the product twice daily to my upper lash line and to my eyebrows. I did not choose to apply any product to my bottom lashes as they are quite long naturally and I am more concerned with my sparse brows. The pen applicator allows for an easy eyeliner like application.
I noticed that my eyelashes became thicker after about three weeks of use. My eyelashes are naturally very light at the tips, so to my naked eye I could not really see a difference at first. It was when my mascara was applied that I was impressed and could see a significant difference in length and density. I do enjoy wearing false lashes for special occasions or nights out, but since using Revita EPS I have not felt the need to apply a strip lash at all.

I do see a small difference in my brows, especially in the front of the brow between my eyes and in the middle of the brow. I feel like it is important to have realistic expectations when it comes to the brow area, as this area is one of the easiest to damage the hair follicles permanently and I am a guilty participant of the 90s thin brow trend. Between last decades' over-tweezing, the fact that I wear my bangs to the right and I tend to sleep on my right side (constant friction) is why the end of my right brow had not filled in how I hoped, and not due to failure of the product.
If you are interested in a lash-enhancing product that does not require a prescription, nor does it come with some of the side effect of a prescription drug, I would recommend the DS Laboratories Revita EPS.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition, which involves facial erythema (redness) and vascular sensitivity. It affects upwards of 16 million people in the United States. While an exact cause and cure is unknown, Rosacea can be controlled.

Symptoms include:

  • Persistent and chronic redness that does not go away and is most commonly located across the forehead, chin, nose and cheeks.
  • Flushing or facial redness that will come and go. This can be accompanied by a warm or hot sensation across the area affected.
  • Pimples, bumps, blackheads and pustules may be visible.
  • Visual blood vessels around the nostrils and across the cheeks.
  • Hardening or thickening of the skin, often affecting the nose, called Rhinophyma. This mostly affects male rosacea patients.

While the exact cause has not been officially pinpointed there are many theories surrounding the cause of rosacea including- an abnormal immune system, blood vessel disorder, parasites such as Demodex mites or H. Pylori bacteria, and fungus.

Triggers that can bring on flushing or exacerbate the condition include: heat, stress, alcohol, cigarettes, spicy food, sun exposure and some skincare product ingredients.

It is important to be under a physician's care to alleviate rosacea symptoms. Common prescription medications may include: Accutane (a systemic vitamin A acne drug), Metrogel (a topical antibiotic), Ciclopirox (an anti-fungal medication), along with many others. In conjunction with professional medical treatment, patients may find relief utilizing services performed by a knowledgeable esthetician. This could include the use of colloidal oatmeal, green tea exacts and tea tree oil.

If you do not suffer from rosacea it is important to be mindful and compassionate when interacting with those who have the condition. If someone is having an episode of skin flushing, it is important to not point it out. Remember they can feel the heat sensation that accompanies the flushing, therefore they are already aware and embarrassment only worsens it!

Beauty Shortcuts

Whether you are a young professional or a busy mom, this does not mean you cannot find time or shortcuts when it comes to a beauty regiment. So what if you do not have an entire day to commit to the spa! Here are a few tips and tricks for even the busiest of people.

Choose multi-tasker products! Use a moisturizer with an SPF, a primer with anti-oxidants, argan oil for cuticles and hair flyaways, or a product that can be used as a cream blush and a lip color.

Don't have time or are you to tired at the end of the day to be using a mask twice a week? Multi-task and apply a mask towards the beginning of your shower, leave it on while you go through your normal shower routine and rinse it off at the end.

Think you do not have time to put on a full face of makeup everyday? Everyone can find ten minutes to apply mascara. Sick of people saying you look tired? Curl your eyelashes, this instantly makes you look more awake, pair this with a good coat of mascara and a nude liner on your bottom waterline and you will have everyone fooled that you got your full eight hours of sleep.

Skip washing your hair everyday. Washing your hair everyday is not recommended as it strips away natural oils. Only wash your hair every other, to every three days. This will cut down on the time it takes for you to get ready in the morning, because you wont be spending so much time blow drying and styling. If you have oily roots use a dry shampoo. If your bangs easily become greasy, tuck your hair into a shower cap but leave your fringe out while you shower and wash your face.

Skip styling your hair by going to bed with it wet and in a loose bun on the top of your head. In the morning let your hair down and part for a gorgeous tousled look.

When getting a manicure opt for gel. The polish is cured using a light and there is no waiting around for it to dry or smudging your polish while digging for your keys in your purse. Gel manicures also last about two weeks.

While some shortcuts can be made here are the steps you should never skip:

Washing your face before bed is a must to remove makeup, oil, dead skin, allergens and other toxins that can lead to skin issues. If you had a late night out or are just feeling completely exhausted, keep a package of facial cleansing wipes next to your bed.  Just do not make this a nightly habit!

Always apply sunscreen, everyday. It does not matter how busy you are, this is not something you can skip or only care about seasonally. Melanoma is one of the most prevalent cancers and it also happens to be the most preventable!

Introducing ACURE

I am not sure if in my professional career, I have ever been this excited about a skincare company, EVER! I have been a vegetarian for over half of my life. 90% of the groceries I bring into my home are organic. Lastly, I am a stickler about recycling- I even recycle the little paper tags off clothing I purchase! It makes me feel good when my work life can coincide with my personal morals that I practice at home. ACURE is a company with ethics. This natural and organic company has chosen a sustainable, eco-friendly and cruelty-free approach. Best of all, all of these good-for-the-people and good-for-the-earth products are completely affordable! Not one item is over 30 dollars.

ACURE is free from:
Animal Testing
Parabens
Sulfates
Phtalates
Synthetic Fragrances
Harmful Preservatives
Artificial Color
Gluten
Sodium Chloride

Benefits to Choosing Organic
Agriculture grown in this manor is free from toxic synthetic pesticides and other chemicals that could potentially enter our soil, water and our bodies. Aside from limiting your exposure to toxins, supporting organic practices may mean not contributing to the frightening bee population crisis. Choosing ACURE means supporting smaller family farms with strong personal connections to the land they are farming and love.

Other "Green" Benefits of ACURE
-ACURE is a Green-e certified company with a neutral carbon footprint
-100% of their office and manufacturing practices are produced using wind and solar power
-All the products are 100% biodegradable and break down safely as to not pollute our water
-The packaging is made from recycled materials and certified sustainable wood

If the "tree hugger" inside of you is not impressed, then maybe the science behind ACURE will entice you. There are two key ingredients in this line:

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF): Chlorella is a single-cell algae rich in nucleic acids. CGF is clinically proven to protect collagen and elastin fibers, making it a key anti-aging ingredient. Clinical studies have shown that CGF increases collagen expression by 333% in a 1% concentration.

Curoxidant Blend: This blend is a combination of five organic fruits and herbs (Acai, pomegranate, black berry, rosehip and roobis) that are potent in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals.

My Favorites
While I have not tried every single product within the line (Trust me, I will get there!), these are some of my favorites so far:

Sensitive Facial Cleanser- Normally when I think about a fragrance free, mild cleanser, I think about something that is lack luster. This cleanser is anything but! It is so rich and creamy. I love this paired with a cleansing device like my FOREO Luna mini. I have oily skin but have issues using cleansers with salicylic acid, as they over sensitize my skin. This cleanser leaves your skin feeling clean yet hydrated with argan oil, probiotics and pumpkin seed oil.

Brightening Facial Scrub- Just like the cleanser changed my mind about fragrance free cream cleansers, this scrub has me changing my position on a physical exfoliant. I do not like scrubs, normally they are too gritty and they over-sensitize the skin. Nothing gives an esthetician an unpleasant twitch like an apricot scrub, ugh.  This scrub does not leave your skin feeling like you just put hundreds of tiny tears into its surface. It is loaded in sea kelp and contains French green clay. Because it contains clay, after I massage it into my skin I like to leave it on in the shower for five minutes. It acts as a mini-mask and pulls out impurities. I use this scrub two times a week so my face feels extra smooth and clean!

Oil Control Facial Moisturizer- This moisturizer has gotten me through this way-too-long winter. My oily skin easily becomes dehydrated, and while most moisturizers for my skin-type feel watery and pointless, this one is rich yet soaks in nicely. Lilac stem cells control oil production and help heal blemishes.

Cell Stimulating Facial Mask- This is a mask for everyone. It contains French green clay to draw out impurities, while adding moisture to the skin from Moroccan argan oil, CoQ10 and Sea buckthorn oil. Unlike other clay masks, this one does not require a lot of friction to remove. Add water to your fingertips and it actually begins to foam. Use circular motions as if you were washing your face prior to splashing with water.

Eye Cream- This eye product performs better than some 200-dollar creams I have tried! You get a lot of product in this tube. Even better, you can use it around the entire eye area, unlike some eye creams, which are not recommended for the lid. This has definitely improved the crepiness underneath my eyes and my concealer is not settling into creases any longer.

A lot of people make comments about wanting to "Go green", but then proclaim  "I don't have the space or time for a compost bin", as if that is their only way to not negatively contribute to environmental problems. There are FAR more ways to limit your carbon footprint. Something as easy as choosing a specific product line can help! That is a simple choice that can add up if you think about how many bottles of lotions and creams are sitting in your medicine cabinet. For me, the money I am saving because ACURE is so affordable, makes it easier for me to purchase and prepare that organic/ vegan kale and quinoa salad I love so much!

5 Reasons to Start Using Face Oils

#1. 100% Argan Oil is an amazing Multitasker!
Use it on your skin, lips, nails, hair & body!

Create softer, glowing skin by applying Argan Oil to your skin! You can also mix it right into your makeup or moisturizer! Don't forget your lips! A few tricks would be to apply a few drops to your lips BEFORE you get in the shower, the steam of the shower combined with the oil will reveal soft smooth lips! You can also use a small amount just before you apply your lipstick for better wear throughout the day. Use it on your cuticles to maintain healthy nails. Treat the ends of your hair with 3-4 warmed drops and see healthy growth as well as fewer dead ends! (I am OBSESSED - my hair is glowing now - who knew that was even possible!) Lastly -this is a tip that as a Mom of 2 I am proud to share. Use the oil directly onto any stretch marks you may have. I have found that the depth of my "proud mommy marks" have shrank & the color is actually fading as well. I am thrilled with the results & am not completely terrified of bikini season coming up!

#2. Celebrity Secret to Glowing Skin & Silky Hair
Eva Mendes, Salma Hayek, Taylor Swift, Gisele Bundchen & Kim Kardashian

There are many articles and photos of Celebrities endorsing the variety of brands out there with Face Oils. The main message behind them all is - when you use Face Oils - your skin GLOWS! A lot of the Celebs will apply the Oil to their skin the night before a big event as well as right before their makeup is applied. There is a bit of light reflecting properties to the product so it works in conjunction with your makeup to reveal even skin tone as well. You could look Red Carpet ready daily but using a Face Oil. Who doesn't want that?! Oh. Did I mention I use it daily & within 1 week had numerous comments about my skin. Yes. That happened.

#3. Great for ALL Skin Types!
The oil does not create more oil, absorbs & helps prevent breakouts!

Anyone with oily skin is going to freak out & NOT want to use a Face Oil. I get it. It doesn't make sense. BUT - it works. I have reduced my amount of breakouts by about 95%. Yes. I am not exaggerating. There are actually antibacterial bonus' to using Face Oil as well as an over "balancing" effect for the skin. Every skin type will notice your skin just feels healthier!

#4. They are PACKED full of Antioxidants!
They will smooth out existing wrinkles, reflect light & boost your SPF powers against free radicals!

Face Oils are packed full of Vitamin E, Essential Fatty Acids and some even have other essential oils included as well. Combining the power of your SPF with the natural protection of the antioxidants in the Face Oil you will be getting extreme anti-aging protection & instant results at the same time. Your skin will feel smoother and your makeup will glide on leaving you with a flawless finish!

#5. Supercharge your normal skincare routine!
After applying your normal regimen, before you apply your makeup, pat the oil on top to create a barrier to provide lasting results all day long.

Add a Face Oil to your normal every day skincare routine for added moisture, repair, protection & glow! One simple final step will help create a barrier on your skin to keep all the products you put on your skin penetrate better as well as seal in the moisture to keep your skin glowing all day long!

Stay beautiful.

Travel Like a Skin Care & Style Pro!

If you are lucky enough to be traveling anytime soon, or are just daydreaming about jet setting to Tahiti, be aware that traveling can take its toll on your skin. Here are my beauty and skin care tips for when you are flying sky high.

Hydrate: Make sure you drink plenty of water before and during your flight. When you are properly hydrated you feel less sluggish, and this will help you beat the jet lag. When you do not feel 100% it shows on the outside. The cabin pressure within the plane can lead to bloating and swelling of the fingers and toes, so opt for water and fruit, over soda and salty snacks.

Moisturize: There is almost no humidity within the cabin of a plane. That means the air circulating around you is pulling moisture from your skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

Apply a lotion or cream to your entire face and body prior to your flight and re-apply often while on board. Choose products with humectants, meaning they draw in and retain moisture. If you suffer from oily skin, don't falsely believe that the dry air from your flight is doing your pores any favors. You still need hydration if you have oily and acne prone skin. Your skin will go into overdrive and produce even more oil to make up for the lack of moisture. While I am a huge fan of facial mists year round, there is speculation on whether or not using these mid-flight will lead to further surface moisture loss from your skin when the cabin air evaporates the water. So just to be safe, save your hydrating spray for when you arrive to your destination for an instant pick me up.

Decreased moisture within your throat and nasal cavity can increase your chances of catching a cold or the flu. Viruses have a much easier time embedding into airways when there is less moisture and mucus creating a protective barrier. A saline spray may be a good option for those who are prone to sore throat and or nosebleeds during flights.

Avoid Makeup: Anyone who knows me, as a makeup artist and makeup addict will not believe I just wrote that! The truth is I have oily skin and large pores so I dread a public face sans foundation, but any time I have worn a full face of makeup on a flight, it looks horrific by the time I land. My foundation will crack and oxidize, turning darker because of my increased oil production, my well-defined brows will have faded and my mascara will have left dark smears on my oily eyelids. I suggest opting for just a facial moisturizer, BB or CC cream and a tinted lip balm, that is it! Just accessorize with an over sized pair of sunglasses and you will not feel the need for eye makeup. Keep a pouch of essentials- mineral powder, mascara, blush and perhaps a bright lipstick in your carry-on so you can apply after your arrival.

Protect your Hair: If you have longer locks, never wear them down during a flight. When your hair is down there is greater surface area for moisture to escape from. Treat your hair with nourishing oil and either braid it, put it in a topknot or a sock bun.  For another layer of protection wear a handkerchief or a silky scarf tied into a turban around your head.

Sun Protection: The debate on whether or not an aisle or window seat is better is very simple to me. I always request a window seat, not for the view, it is so I can pull the window shade completely down. While the rules of etiquette may not be set in stone when it comes to who's arm rest belongs to who, it is cut and dry when it comes to the window- whomever sits next to it, is in control of it. Remember you are not on the surface of the earth anymore and the intensity of UV exposure increases with elevation. In your approved quart size bag, containing 3oz containers, there must be a sunscreen, preferably with an SPF of 30. As always choose a sunscreen that states it is broad spectrum or has a high PA+++ rating. Don't forget to apply sun-protection to the sides of your face, neck, ears and hands as these areas often go over looked. Make sure your carry-on lip balm contains sunscreen. Those oversized sunglasses are not just for hiding your lack of eye makeup; they are protecting your retinas from damage and preventing crow's feet.

These tips should have you feeling ready to embark upon your next trip. Your suitcase is packed, your skin is prepped and you will be departing with everyone wondering - Who is that woman with the headscarf, dark shades and GORGEOUS skin?!

Men Skin Care - Keep it Simple!

With each passing year the skin care market for men is growing. What was once a minuscule section of aftershaves has turned into row after row of cobalt blue and gunmetal color packaging with bold type faces. So how do you choose what products are worth it and how do you break through the hype?

Men's Needs can Differ

There are several common issues men deal with regards to their skin:

Oil and Acne: Sebum, the oily skin lubricant, is produced within the follicle. Because guys have more hair on their face, they subsequently can produce more oil. Men are more likely to participate in physical work that causes more sweat. If skin is not properly washed or there is lax approach to hygiene, bacteria and oil get trapped within the follicle leading to breakouts. Generally men do not see a reason to be as nit picky as women. Before you know it, you are in the gym on the treadmill, you have taken your germ-covered hand to wipe the sweat from your brow and have deposited bacteria directly into your dilated pores. Oh and that beanie or baseball cap you have been wearing for years? Yes it is the reason you have pimples across your forehead and hairline.

Folliculitis: This is a bacteria infection within the follicle. It is characterized by whitehead pustules around the hair accompanied by inflammation and can be painful. Severe cases are treated by a dermatologist, with the use of antibiotic or anti-fungal/ yeast medication. Folliculitis has a lesser evil but never the less annoying little brother, pseudofolliculitis, you know this as razor rash or razor bumps. This occurs when facial hairs start to grow curled into the skin due to shaving. It has the appearance of red bumps and ingrown hairs. Changing you shaving technique can eliminate this problem.

Dry Skin/Dehydrated Skin: Skin that is dry and tight can be genetic or environmental. Some people naturally have dry skin but many other factors can contribute to this issue. If while taking a nearly scalding hot shower, you are choosing to use a certain overly scented green bar of soap on your face, then it is no wonder upon toweling off that your face feels so tight and uncomfortable. Bad habits such as over exposure to the sun and smoking will also dry out the skin.

After 8 years in the skin care industry this is what I have learned about men:

They cannot be bothered by having to deal with far to many products or too many multiple steps.

Men are more likely over women to discontinue the use of a product solely because they do not like the feel or scent of it.

Contrary to the two points I just touched on, I embrace men as an important part of my clientele because men are more likely to be consistent when following an estheticians instructions. They are some of my most loyal client base and like to adhere to a consistent schedule; this same mindset can overlap into grooming and skin care.

If you are a guy interested in starting a skin care routine or you are trying to get your man into skin care, here are a few key pointers:

Keep it simple and multitask. I would start with only two products, a cleanser and a moisturizer. A cleanser needs to not only remove surface oil but help exfoliate, so choose something that contains AHAs, BHAs or a gentle physical exfoliant. Please stay away from cleansers that have large grit to them. Men tend to be overly rough and excessive scrubbing can lead to, or aggravate an existing condition. The moisturizer should be soothing enough for use post shaving but also contain a broad spectrum SPF.

While "For Men" products are formulated to be more quickly absorbing and to have a more attractive packaging, don't discount the effectiveness of other products. If you have been secretly using your wife's facial wash in the shower and you love it, don't stop!

My Recommendations for Shaving:

Shave after you shower and not before. While in the shower the moisture softens the hair leading to an easier shave.

If you consistently have sensitivity to shaving, shave with the hair growth, not against the grain. An electric razor is another option for sensitive skin types.

Razors with five blades may be a bit much.  While for some it is the closest shave they can get, other guys find that the friction caused by multiple blades can lead to irritation.

My Favorites for Men willing to go Beyond Just a Basic Cleanse:

FOREO Luna for Men- Whether you have sensitive skin or you are a gadget guru, this device preps the skin for shaving, helping you get a closer shave and with less razor burn. It takes the place of an exfoliant wash. Exfoliated skin appears more even in tone. It is less likely to have clogged pores and more easily absorbs moisturizers and aftershaves.

Turo skin Daily Moisturizing Lotion + SPF 15- This lotion is a true multi-tasker. It sooths and moisturizes the skin post shaving all while protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays.

Obagi ELASTIderm Eye Complete Complex Serum- This anti-aging serum is in an easy to use roller-ball style pen applicator. The roller-ball remains cool to the touch to help sooth eyes. Caffeine reduces puffiness and tightens the skin making you appear more awake and ready to take on the day.

While getting some guys to even wash their face is a gigantic task, others are willing to follow some sort of skin care regiment. The bottom line with men is there cannot be major time and money invested to only yield unnoticeable results.

Why Vitamin C should be part of your Skin Care Arsenal right now!

Dull lack luster skin, loss of youthful plumpness, age spots and uneven skin tone all have something in common besides making you feel less than confident about your face. All of these common beauty woes can all be treated with the use of one ingredient, Vitamin C!

Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen. Collagen gives our skin its elasticity and plumpness. Over our lifetime the amount of Vitamin C found in the skin naturally decreases. Another way Vitamin C can keep us looking youthful is by preventing and reversing damage from the sun. This powerful antioxidant fights free radicals that cause cellular damage. Age spots are not because you are getting older, they occur because your skin was overexposed to the sun, and the cells responsible for pigmentation have been permanently damaged.

While some vitamins and minerals are better absorbed through diet, Vitamin C is a powerhouse when applied topically. Studies have shown that Vitamin C has about a 20 times better absorption rate when applied topically rather than taken orally!

What to look for when choosing a Vitamin C product:

  • Look for an airtight container that is opaque. Exposure to Air and light will break down Vitamin C, making it less effective.

  • Choose a product that has the percentage on the label. Anything containing less than 10% Vitamin C will yield little to no results from this antioxidant.

What to know when using a Vitamin C product:

  • While some people might notice a change in their skin's appearance in as little as 2 week, give up to 8 weeks before you start to notice an improvement. Maximum results will be achieved after 6 months of continuous use.

  • Vitamin C (in the form of L-ascorbic acid) is a great ingredient to use on your skin post laser or microdermabrasion as it has anti-inflammatory properties and will prevent new skin discoloration.

  • This powerful antioxidant turns over cells and can lead to flaking, dry skin, so it is important to apply a moisturizer over a Vitamin C serum.

So, for that part about why including Vitamin C into your skin care routine is so important - imagine a glowing complexion, a more even skin tone with less fine lines and no hyperpigmentation.  A better skin care regiment, with better ingredients can have you looking your best by the time spring has arrived. Once this fresh face is achieved, you will be far less likely to revert back to your old bad habits. Those toxic skin habits, like unprotected sun exposure are soon to be in your rear view mirror because you are about to put your best, fresh face forward come 2014!

I have a confession. I am obsessed with skincare products. Take 2.

My skincare obsession is still uncontrollable. I really just can't help it. So, here are some secrets, tips and tricks I would LOVE to share with you during the Holiday Season!

What you eat, extra stress and the change in season are going to affect your skin! Make sure you are still drinking lots of water and you may need to switch to a heavier moisturizer both day and night.

Secret: If you get your guy any of our sweet Men's line products, yes you can use them too! Shhhhh. I may or may not sneak some of the TURO Skin 3 in 1 shower gel. I also fell completely head over heels in love with their spot treatment. It smells amazing & has cleared up my skin in like a day.

Tip: Since winter is officially here, make sure at least at night you are using a heavier moisturizer. I use a heavier moisturizer with glycolic acid at night (Glytone is my must have for Glycolic Acid) & during the day I use the Phytomer Souffle Marin Energizing Oxygenating Serum because it feels like heaven. Even with combination skin that tends to break out, this dry brisk weather really dries my skin out and makes it uncomfortable. If you suffer from dry/sensitive skin I HIGHLY recommend checking out ATOPALM

Trick: Have a Holiday Party to go to? This is my typical "going out" routine:
1. Wash my face with my Glytone Acne Cleanser & LUNA
2. Apply the Rodial Snake Mask for about 20-30 minutes (during the down time I pick out my clothes or shave my leggies).
3. Apply the Glytone Boost Mini Gel for 10 minutes and rinse, dry my skin.
4. Apply my Phytomer Souffle Marin Energizing Oxygenating Serum
5. Prime for makeup with the OC8 Professional Mattifying Gel
6. Apply my Osmosis Colour makeup.

Here is what my makeup bag consists of: Natural Light Pressed Base start with light applications to build coverage, conceal with the Silk Age Defying Treatment Concealer, add a little color with the South Beach Bronzer, a splash of pink pearl blush, pick out my eye shadow based on my outfit & finish it off with a spritz of Mineral Mist.

Ok. I sound very high maintenance after writing this blog. I am not even close! I just make sure to do the basics daily to keep my skin healthy first & clear for my self! I also am blessed with good genetics & will most likely look 23 forever. Plus, doesn't every girl like to have fun for a Holiday Party & get all fancy?!

Happy Holidays! Enjoy your family & friends! Be safe & let's get ready for a great New Year!

Stay beautiful.

Protect Your Skin while Enjoying Winter Sports

What if I was to tell you that as you are headed down the slopes this winter, you are being exposed to almost twice the amount of UV rays than usual? Yes, this is true! Not only are you receiving direct exposure from the sun, but also around 80% of those rays are bouncing off the surface of the snow and back at your skin! To further complicate things, the strength of UV radiation increases with elevation.

Sun exposure, wind exposure, and chilling temperatures can damage the skin, leading to sensitivities and pre-mature aging. No one should be giving up the health benefits from skiing and snowboarding, but steps should be taken to protect the health of the skin.

1. Use an emollient rich moisturizer or lotion to create a protective layer against outdoor conditions and protect skin against cracking, drying and redness due to over sensitization.

2. Sun protection is a must!  Apply a broad spectrum or a PA sunscreen 20 minutes prior to exposure. Reapplication is crucial throughout the day. Harsh winds, wet conditions and sweating can break down sunscreens more quickly than normal so be diligent about reapplying every 90 minutes or less.

3. Do not forget your lips. The skin on the lips is thinner than most of the skin on the rest of the face, making it more susceptible to damage from winds, low temperatures and sunburn.  Harsh conditions will easily lead to uncomfortable and unsightly chapped lips. A very common place on the face for skin cancer is the lips, as they are commonly forgotten, and rarely protected. Use a lip balm with at least an SPF of 15, though an SPF of 30 is ideal. Keep it in a zipped pocket and reapply often.

4. Wear protective clothing and eyewear. Dark clothing, layered fabrics and thicker fabrics will filter out more UV rays. Wear protective clothing around your neck and face. Do not go without gloves, wear a hat to protect your scalp and ears, and make sure your goggles are UV protectant.

5. Limit your exposure. Avoid peek hours of UV exposure by getting to the mountain in the early hours of the morning, or waiting until the late afternoon or early evening.

6. If your skin is red, blotchy, tingling and or numb, it is time to take a break and warm up indoors. This is a sign of frostnip, not as serious as frostbite but a precursor and a warning.

These tips should insure you are having fun this winter while maintaining and protecting the health of your skin. So strap on the bindings, click into those skis and enjoy!

Winter Skin Care

If you are experiencing tight, dry, cracked and irritated skin, you are not alone! Cold air contains less humidity; in turn we crank up the thermostat. While trying to keep warm in our homes, vehicles and workplaces we are drawing surface moisture from our skin and mucous membranes.

Here's how to combat the dry skin winter blues:
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
- Apply a full body slather daily, ideally twice a day. I am still shocked to find out that there are people who never apply lotion, not even to their freshly shaven legs!

- Do not forget about those areas of the body that are the most exposed and susceptible to dry heat like the hands and lips. Apply moisturizers to these areas as often as you can remember throughout the day. At night, those simple cotton gloves and booties are great for helping lotion to penetrate your hands and feet, while giving a cloth protection from surface moisture evaporation.

- Change the type of moisturizer you are using. That lightweight lotion you were using in the summer may no longer be enough. You may need to switch to an oil-based product during the winter months.

- Use a humidifier. They are relatively inexpensive and add much needed moisture into the air. Keep one close to your bed while sleeping. Your face, sinuses and throat will thank you in the morning.

Change how you Shower
- Avoid hot prolonged showers. Hot water can compromise the lipid layer of the skin. This leads to moisture loss and irritation. Try to shorten the length of your shower to around 10 minutes.

- Apply your lotion or body oil IMMEDIATELY after a shower. I am talking about within the first 2 minutes! It is important to trap and lock-in any surface moisture that is left on the skin after toweling off. If "Out of sight, out of mind" is a saying that pertains to you when it comes to remembering to use lotion after showering, then leave it on the ledge of your tub where it is visible.

- Gently pat your skin dry. If your skin is already feeling irritated chances are it is because your skin's acid mantle and its protective lipids are compromised. Be gentle, rubbing the skin roughly can further aggravate sensitive skin, eczema, and psoriasis.

I personally LOVE mine and have several people completely hooked on this device! The range starts at $139 for the LUNA mini. This is great for ANYONE:  teenagers, men, travel, the gym & the beauty savvy guru on a budget. The LUNA ($199.99) is available in 3 colors that are targeted to your individual skin type, so this is a little more tricky for a present. They even have a LUNA for Men (also $199.99). The LUNA for Men is going to be the hottest new trend for men, not only does it promote healthy skin but it truly gives men the ultimate shave when you use this first! You will be surprised how much your guy will end up loving this fancy tool after they start using it! Then we have the all mighty and powerful LUNA Pro. The Pro is $299, but any skin type can use it & it has twin motors to really focus on both cleansing and anti-aging. Trust me. You will feel the difference immediately. This is currently a HOT item at askderm - mainly because we are lucky enough to be one of the only online retailers who sell the Pro!

Teenagers, Woman, Men - basically everyone LOVES the Clarisonic! It has really turned into quite the big deal. We have devices ranging from $125 for the Mia all the way to the Aria that is $204. Don't forget if you gave someone a device last year - the Replacement Brush Heads are great stocking stuffers this year! 3. meSmooth. I really can not tell you enough how exciting I am to be selling this product! It is truly one of the only at home professional laser hair removal systems on the market right now! The WINTER is the PERFECT time to invest in this gadget! Why? Because - your all bundled up so no one notices your skin. How amazing would it be when spring and summer comes around to NOT have to shave! Not have to worry about your skin having stubble instead of being smooth? Oh and not have to pay THOUSANDS of dollars and make appointments and rush around during your "lunch break". Yup. Thats right. $395 for the device & $50 for replacement cartridges. 7 weeks to beautiful hair free skin! I wouldn't be so excited about this one if I didn't see the results myself. PLUS: you can absolutely share this! You can buy 1 device and each person get their own cartridge and viola instant savings! Ok. I could go on forever - but on to the next gift.

4. Osmosis Colour is our newest addition to our mineral makeup category. I have used everything from Jane Iredale, Bare Minerals, Colorescience, even products like ForeverMakeup. This is my new crush. I can't get enough. I am a simple lady when it comes to my makeup. I really like to look natural. I am also very busy with 2 toddlers. So simple, lightweight, natural, flawless coverage and long lasting is crucial to me. The Osmosis Colour is all of the above and more. Plus, this may sound really strange - but it smells AMAZING! I love how you can really build your coverage and by the end of the work day you still look how you did when you came in! This is starting to really expand too - perfect for Holiday Photos, Family Portraits, Senior Pictures coming up. It photographs flawlessly.

5. Nip+Fab Viper Venom Wrinkle Fix is on here for multiple reasons. Clearly its a hot new product. It is also flying off our shelves and is UNDER $20! Honestly I would suggest any Nip+Fab or Nip+Man product as a great stocking stuffer! It is an amazing line with a wide variety of products. I know I will be gifting it to my friends and family this year!

6. VB Beauty has a cool eye Sonic Infusor Tool that comes in a kit with a product. This neato device really helps correct and honestly relax the eye area! It works amazingly on puffy eyes (like I stated above - I have 2 toddlers & sometimes I wake up looking & feeling like a zombie so I grab for my VB Beauty Infusor tool to help get rid of those scary looking bags under my eyes). For $25 - on sale now for a limited time offer - you can NOT go wrong by getting this for your friends or family!

7. NIA 24 has a great kit called the Healthy Skin Regimen Kit. This is perfect for ALL skin types and for any age. The NIA 24 products are geared towards not only preventing and protecting but also correcting any signs of aging or damage done t your skin. So if you have any questions as to what type of skin or what skincare products your special person in your life would be using then I would highly suggest this. My personal FAV is the physical cleansing scrub. I can not live without this. It is life changing.

8. TURO is all for the Man in your life. Or Men. I gave my guy the Starter Kit: Cleanse / Shave / Moisturize for his birthday this year and not only does he actually use it. He loves it. I may also sneak some of the body wash every once in a while because it just smells so good and your skin feels amazing! Men skincare is the biggest thing right now, even at the drugstore I have noticed Men's lines popping up all over. Keep your man looking slick with these products! He will thank you, even if he is hesitant to use it at first!

9. Neostrata has a full range of very effective anti-aging products. They offer a Skin Active Comprehensive Antiaging Regimen that is a 4 piece kit that will offer great results and would be a great way to interdict anti-aging products to say, your mom or an aunt or co-worker! I am fast approaching the 30's so I do not necessarily need these items yet, but I have given them as gifts a few times and have received rave reviews of the product afterwards!

10. Last but not least is the Wilma Schumann Holiday Kit! This is a must have on this list! It comes in the cutest bag and is packed full of Wilma Schumann goodies! The Collagen Booster Pads will change your life, the O2 Oxygen Blu is great for all skin types and the Collagen 2000 & Liposome Eye Contour are perfect for anti-aging! This kit really does have it all and works for such a wide variety of skin types anyone would fall in love with it as a gift!

So there is my list of whats hot this Holiday Season. Check the products out, if you have any questions or need more information just give a shout and we can help with your gift buying this Holiday Season! (Even if it is a present for yourself!)

Stay beautiful.

I have a confession. I am obsessed with skincare products. Take 1.

Ok. So here is the scoop. I have a problem. My bathroom sink looks like I should be on an episode of hoarders. I have SO many skincare products I don't know what to do with myself. With that being said, I still continually stick with a few key products NO MATTER WHAT! Let's be honest. When your skin loves a product, keep using it!

Today I am going to talk about the serums I use & a brand new product I can't live without-
I have tried several Vitamin C Serums and anti-aging serums but always come back to iS Clinical Active Serum & Pro-Heal Serum. (Yes. Anti-aging. I am almost 30 & because I have been proactive since my early 20's from working here at #askderm I will forever look like I'm 18.) My skin just LOVES these products. I use the Pro-Heal every single morning & then I use Active Serum at night. This powerful duo is AMAZING & when I need a little extra pick me up or really want to glow I switch out my Pro-Heal in the morning for the Instant Smoothing Gel. This is a newer product by iS Clinical and let me tell you, the name couldn't be more perfect. After applying a very thin layer of this gel & finishing off your normal skincare routine you will be shocked at how your skin turns into the most amazing canvas for your makeup application. (Try Osmosis Colour! My new mineral makeup obsession that I will write about later!)

The great part about this new Instant Smoothing Gel is how much is packed into this product! All the great skincare "buzz" words you are looking for are IN this product: INSTANT, SMOOTHING, Long-Term, Tightenting, Peptides, Growth Factors, Proteins, Anti-Aging, Cellular, Antioxidant, Collagen, Elastin, Strengthen, Clinically Proven, Reduces Puffiness, Reduces Dark Circles. This product does it ALL!

So the moral of the story is - even though I have unlimited access to literally 1,000s of products - I can not get enough of the iS Clinical products - especially these three! #ActiveSerum #ProHealSerum #InstantSmoothingGel

Oh & did I forget to mention that when you purchase ANY iS Clinical products you will receive a FREE sample of the Instant Smoothing Gel (with a hidden treasure included with the sample packett)! This offer is valid while supplies last - so don't miss out!

Stay beautiful.

Dull Skin

While dull skin is a common complaint from people who are concerned with the inevitability of aging, lack-luster skin becomes more of an issue during the colder winter months. With a few changes to one's skin care regiment, a healthy glow can once again be achieved.

What is dull skin and what causes it?
When skin is described as being dull what we are actually seeing and talking about is a buildup of dead skin cells within the Stratum Corneum, or the out most layer of our skin, the Epidermis. The skin's average natural turn over rate is about 28 days. This rate slows as we age and can be anywhere from 30 days to 3 months! The reason a small child's skin is so soft and looks so healthy is due to an on average 14-day cellular turnover rate.

What many people do not know is that factors such as smoking, UV exposure, dehydration, and makeup can all negatively affect cellular turnover.

How to regain that glow:

Exfoliation- Remove excess dead skin and makeup residue by using a cleansing devise like the Clarisonic or FOREO Luna daily, a gentle scrub two or three times a week, or an at home chemical peel of glycolic or lactic acid weekly.

Moisturize- When the skin cells are hydrated and the lipid barrier of the skin is healthy, the entire process of cellular turnover occurs with more ease and happens with less irritation.

Vitamin C- topical Vitamin C delivered through a product like a serum is a great way to brighten a complexion. Vitamin C slows free radical damage that occurs from ultra violet radiation and may prevent DNA damage in the nucleus of the cell.  This antioxidant is pivotal in the production of collagen and combating photodamage.

Essential Fatty Acids- Oils and foods high in Omegas such as fatty fish, nuts, flax and fish oil actually help the skin retain moisture. This can decrease the chances of skin sensitivity, inflammation and dermatitis.

These few tips should help you regain and maintain a healthy glow throughout the long winter months.

How To Properly Wash Your Face

When washing their face, many people are in an autopilot mode, putting little thought into what their hands are actually doing. What if these little habits and hand movements were causing you skin irritation, premature aging and breakouts?

Wash Your Hands
We know to wash our hands before we prepare a meal, but very few people think about washing their hands with soap and water prior to washing their face. This step is crucial if you are partial to breakouts or clogged pores.

Remove Your Makeup
Removing makeup is a separate step than cleansing. Choose your favorite eye makeup remover wipe, cleansing oil or remover on a cotton round. Just make sure you use a gentle down sweeping motion rather than rubbing back and forth. Rubbing eyes excessively can cause unwanted fine lines and crepey skin.

Wash Twice A Day
Only if you have over sensitized skin should you skip washing your face twice daily and if you do, it should only be your morning cleanse. Night time cleansing is hands down the most important as you need to remove your makeup which has collected or trapped oil, bacteria, toxins and dead skin cells. Washing at night prepares the skin to take on all the treatment products you will be applying afterwards.

Rinse Your Face
Make sure to rinse thoroughly as to not leave any cleanser  or mask residue that could inhibit your treatment products like serums from effectively penetrating. Use warm rather than hot water as it can over dry the skin and cause redness. In the morning try rinsing with cool water or splashing with cold water a few times afterwards to constrict blood vessels and tighten pores.

Drying Your Face
Use a clean towel to dry your face. Never use the hand towel right next to the sink that everyone else has been using to dry his or her hands. Use a patting motion rather than scrubbing the towel roughly against the skin to avoid irritation.

Dark Circles

Are dark eye circles leaving you feeling more ghoulish than glamorous?
Darkness around the eyes is a very common beauty complaint. Many factors can contribute but luckily there are about just as many ways to combat this common issue, as there are causes.

What Causes Dark Circles Around the Eyes?
When you see a bluish hue around the eye, what you are actually seeing is oxygenated blood that has pooled or seeped out of blood vessels and is visible through the extremely thin skin around the orbital area of the eye.
Many factors contribute to this problem. Some are beyond your control, while other contributing factors can be tackled.
Heredity - it is common that if everyone else in your family has dark circles then chances are you will too. These can be bluish if you are fair skinned and the tissue is more transparent, or a darkened pigmentation if you are from Asian, Middle Eastern or African decent.
Lifestyle - Bad habits like smoking, lack of exercise, fatigue and over exposure to the sun can lead to dark circles.
Nasal Congestion and Allergies - When your body releases histamine this causes inflammation and swelling in the sinuses reducing blood flow. Rubbing your eyes can also aggravate issues.
Aging - this natural process contributes to the loss of collagen. As we age we loose the fat in the eye area, which hides the blood from being visible.
How do you Alleviate Dark Circles?
At night sleep with your head propped up rather than lying completely flat or face down to prevent this blood from building up and pooling in the eye area.
In the morning apply a cool compress or a frozen eye mask for five minutes.
There are many vitamins and minerals you want to incorporate into your diet through fruits and vegetables and into your skin care to help the health of the eye area.

Caffeine - an instant eye pick-me-up. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and can boost circulation.
Hydrators - keeping this delicate tissue moisturized will improve the appearance of the skin. Ingredients like Hyaluronic acid plump the tissue.
Retinols - Vitamin A can thicken the skin tissue to conceal.
Vitamin C - brightens the skin and can lessen the appearance of sallow skin. Vitamin C is also involved in the production of collagen.
Vitamin K - reduces inflammation and is used in bruise treatments.
Iron - Blood is rich in iron but can be affected by menstrual cycle, pregnancy or anemia. Low iron can lead to paleness in the skin.

Sunscreen Rating Systems

You may be confused by a newly noticed graphic with plus signs (+) located on skin care products for sun protection. You may be a product junkie and are already in the know. You may travel often or live in another country that uses this system as a standard practice.

What am I referring to? The PA system (Protection grade against UVA). This system is based on three levels: PA+, PA++ and PA+++. PA+ is the lowest level of protection against UVA rays while PA+++ is the highest level of protection against UVA radiation. This system was developed in Japan and is getting more recognition as product availability expands worldwide.

In the United States, SPF rating is the FDA standard in which we measure sunscreen's effectiveness against UVB only. There is no rating system within the states to signify a products protection against UVA except for the labeling "Broad Spectrum."

As more people become educated on the dangers of UVA, this PA rating system will surely gain more attention.

If you want to know more about the dangers of UVA please refer to my "Why you need to Protect Yourself from the Sun Year round" blog.

Bad Habits that May be Aging Your Skin

While some bad habits have obvious consequences, there are others that might not be so obvious when it comes to affecting the skin. We do have some control over the aging process. You need to be aware that these bad habits will accelerate the aging process.

Tanning/Unprotected Sun Exposure:
UV damage is the leading cause of premature aging, wrinkles and skin discoloration. Yes, there really is a Holy Grail anti-aging product. It is called sunscreen. Wear sunscreen everyday, year round and reapply often.

Being Harsh on the Eyes:
The skin surrounding the eyes is thin and delicate. Being too rough on the skin when applying products, tugging at the eye area when inserting contacts, rubbing eyes or removing makeup roughly can cause creepiness and speed the aging process. Always use your ring finger when applying eye cream, as it is your weakest digit and dab the product on rather than rubbing it in.

Not Removing Your Makeup at Night:
Makeup, dirt, pollution and allergens collect and stick to the surface of the skin. Makeup can prevent the skin from breathing and impair the natural skin cycle in which dead skin cells sloth off. Not removing these nightly can lead to enlarged pores and skin irritations.

Lack of Sleep:
Beauty sleep is a real thing. At night our bodies (and skin) are in a reparative mode.  Some hormones are at their most balanced during the night and affect metabolic changes within the body. So catch some zzzs and your face will be pleased.

Sleep positioning:
Sleeping on your side or on your stomach with your face smushed into the pillow increases wrinkles on the sides of the face, brows and cheeks. Train yourself to sleep on your back. A light fitting eye mask may make it more comfortable. Satin pillowcases or specialized beauty pillows will also allow your skin to glide across the surface of the case, rather than scrunching the skin into it.

Not Wearing Sunglasses or Proper Prescription Glasses:
Constant repetitive motions like squinting cause fine lines around the eyes. Wear sunglasses regularly and even on cloudy days to protect your eyes and the surrounding tissue from the damaging, aging (UVA) rays of the sun. Schedule eye exams every two years to ensure your prescription is correct.

Smoking:
Beside the obvious dangers, smoking inhibits proper blood flow and ages the skin. Wrinkles around the mouth become more visible when the collagen and other connective tissues are broken down.  Skin tone and vibrancy is also affected.

Not Eating Enough Fruits and Vegetables:
Aside from being low in calorie and high in fiber, fruits and veggies are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free radical damage and some have a role in preventing free radials from even forming. Free radical damage leads to aging and disease. Eat a variety as they all contain different vitamins, minerals and flavionoids to nourish the body and the skin.

Why you need to Protect Yourself from the Sun Year Round

Summer may be over, but protecting your skin from UV radiation needs to be a priority year-round.

Did you know that there are UV rays that cause cellular damage, including cancer and premature aging year round? UVA rays have the same intensity and cause the same amount of damage, sun up to sun down, no matter what time of the year and even penetrate cloud cover and glass!

You may not be aware that there are two types of radiation from the sun that negatively affect our skin and our health: UVA and UVB rays.

UVB Damage
UVB rays are the short-wave length rays that penetrate the epidermis and bounce back causing sunburns and the majority of skin cancers.  Sun Protection Factor (SPF) signifies only the amount of protection against UVB rays, NOT UVA rays.

UVA Damage
UVA rays penetrate all the way to the dermis, unlike UVB rays. The damaging effects of UVA radiation is not immediately noticeable like the effects of a sunburn from UVB rays, but their effects are the most long term.

UVA radiation is responsible for:
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Reduction in collagen
  • Cataracts
  • Cancer

So how do we Protect Ourselves from UVA Radiation?

To protect yourself from UVA radiation, you must choose a sunscreen that is labeled "Broad Spectrum" and you must wear it year round.

Look for these sunscreen ingredients to protect your skin from UVA damage:

  • Avobenzone
  • Oxybenzone
  • Ecamsule (Mexoryl)
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Titanium Dioxide

Apply sunscreen every day. There are times that you are being
exposed that you may not even realize. If you are driving to work, the side of your face and your hands are directly absorbing UVA rays, same goes for anyone working in an office and sitting by a window.

Elta MD's UV Clear contains Zinc Oxide to protect from UVA rays and the effects of premature aging.  I consider it my "Driving cream" for my hands. It has no greasy feel and does not leave a white residue on my steering wheel.

La Roche-Posay's Anthelios SX SPF-15 is fairly new to the United States as it utilizes not just Avobenzone but Mexoryl, meaning it completely covers the entire UVA spectrum (UVA I & UVA II), unlike some Broad Spectrum sunscreens. This Sunscreen is moisturizing and perfect for everyday use.

Intrinsic aging is the type of aging that is a natural part of life and is caused by genetics and hormones- meaning it is out of our control. Extrinsic aging, on the other hand is the aging we have caused ourselves by UV exposure, cigarette smoking, pollution and other environmental factors. About 80% of visible aging is caused by the extrinsic factor of sun damage. The good news is that we have control over this type of aging, so start slathering!

Get the Glytone Glow Today!

Everyone wants it. That radiant glow.

Well, the good news is it really isn't that hard to achieve!  Glytone has a wide variety of products that are extremely easy to coordinate to your skin type. Anyone from Sensitive to Oily/Acne prone can use the line and find products to give them their own natural glow of healthy skin.

Why Glytone you ask?

Well it's pretty easy. They are a physician grade product line that uses Free Acid Value Glycolic Acid. This means: there are no "buffers" to help your skin tolerate a higher percentage. It has a "bioavailable value of glycolic acid, and delivers more glycolic acid to the skin to achieve a higher efficacy." - Directly from Glytone

What does this really mean? It means that you are getting a more potent and effective glycolic acid at a lower percentage that isn't combined with other filler ingredients to make your skin tolerate it better. If you are used to a 30% from, lets say MD Forte Cream III, it is not the same as the free acid value of 20% that the Glytone Rejuvenate Facial Cream 3 contains. This is a great example of the fact that higher is not always better when it comes to your skin!

Now that you know WHY you should use Glytone, lets get you started on WHAT to use.

Hands down, our #1 Seller overall is the Mild Gel Wash! Our customers just cannot get enough of this cleanser! Why? Well, it's really great for EVERYONE and has 4.7% glycolic acid  - and BEST part is - it is only $30 for 6.7 oz (approximately a 3 month supply). Not only is this a cleanser, but it also helps exfoliate your skin so it truly does prep your skin perfectly for all your skin care products after you step out of the shower.

Now the POWERHOUSE antioxidant serum that is crucial for not only anti-aging skincare, but for healthy skin! The Prevent Anti-Aging Serum, in our opinion, is actually BETTER than SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. Did we forget to mention it is also less expensive? Well, surprisingly it is ($120 vs $153)! This white creamy serum will not oxidize on you and spoil. It is stable AND time released! So, you end up with better longer protection. It is a powerhouse based on the amount of active ingredients packed in there! Quick List: Vitamins C & E, Red Tea Flavonoids & Glycolic Acid. This product will not only prevent future damage, it will also help treat existing fine lines and wrinkles while providing soothing repairing protection.

This next step is really dependent of your skin type. Glytone offers 2 different delivery methods based on your skin. Which is very important to keep a balanced complexion. Always start with the lowest level (1). You can build a tolerance and gradually move up the levels - but no need to just jump right in. So here is the low down on your 3rd step in your daily routine:
Normal to Dry Skin use the Rejuvenate Facial Cream (1-3)
Combination to Oily Skin use the Rejuvenate Facial Lotion (1-3)

SPF Protection is crucial ALL YEAR LONG! Many people forget this step in the cold, dreary months but it really needs to be your last step before makeup application EVERYDAY! Glytone has Screen Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 40 - it's a lighter consistency, oil free and won't clog your pores! It also has hyaluronic acid in it so it is a great base for makeup application.

Quick note on Acne Prone Skin:
We have 2 Kits that come with EVERYTHING you will need for a 3 month supply of treatment! How perfect & cost effective is that! So here they are -
TOP SELLER: Acne Treatment Kit - 3 piece kit for $66
Newer: Acne Treatment Kit Anti-Irritation - 3 piece kit for $87

Now on to "Night Time" treatments. Huge tip that is often ignored - Always cleanse your face before bed!

Glytone has an AWARD WINNING Night Cream! How exciting and once you use it you will instantly understand why it won. The Antioxidant Anti-Aging Night Cream comes in a classy jar and is packed full of Peptides, Vitamin E, Red Tea Flavonoids & of course Glycolic Acid. Your skin will thank you for this gem.

The other option is for our "retinol" users. The Enhance Night Renewal contains Glytone's Retinaldehyde and Glycolic Acid for firmer and smoother skin. This is a newer product that is already gaining a lot of buzz. Your skin will soak this up over night and when you wake up you will see a difference!

Now for some of the fun - AND completely necessary bonus products:

Boost Mini Peel Gel: This product is like a mini peel at home! If you have an event coming up - use it just before you are going to do your make up to reveal a serious glow! Very impressive and EVERYONE should have this product! Oh yeah, and it also won a "Best of Beauty Award" by allure.

KP Kit: Top Seller. Best treatment for keratosis pliaris, the little red bumps on the backs of your arms and legs. This kit is also perfect for dry skin - or just overall renewed smoothness for your body! Everyone focuses on their face when it comes to skincare, but the rest of your body needs to be taken care of too!

Ok. Now that your head is spinning and your shopping cart is full. Don't freak out! Just remember. Cleanse. Treat. Hydrate. Protect! These are the basic "core steps" when it comes to ALL skin care regimens. Of course we are realistic and know not everyone can rush right to askderm and purchase a FULL skin care regimen. BUT. If you need any suggestions of which key products you should be using, don't forget we have an expertly staffed Customer Service Team who can help you make these hard decisions easy! We strive on knowledge and we have the most amazing Glytone Advisor who helps keep us up to date on all things Glytone and Skin!

Stay beautiful.
